Webster’s dictionary defines diversity as, “the condition of being different: variety.” The United States of America is very diverse. We have had some influential people that have helped steer us in the ways that we know diversity today. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was very influential in changing the way many white Americans looked at African- Americans during the 1960’s. Long before Dr. King marched on Selma, Alabama and gave his “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington, D.C., Abraham Lincoln tried to change the culture of America by freeing the slaves in 1865 with the Emancipation Proclamation. However, one hundred years later, African-Americans still did not have the same rights as white Americans. They could not ride in the front of the bus, enter the same door of a restaurant, drink from the same water fountain, or attend the same schools as whites. Because of Dr. King’s determination and leadership, the culture of America began to change. In 2008, we saw the greatest example of this change with the election of the first African-American President of the United States, Barack Obama.

is sometimes called the ‘melting pot’ of the world because of all the diverse cultures. These diverse cultures give us the Mexican, Chinese, Soul, Vietnamese, or Cajun foods that we find in restaurants today.
There are so many examples of the diverse cultures in this country just by the type of foods that are eaten in the different areas.
An example of this is how people in New York may have never tasted gumbo or jambalaya, while in New Orleans these are common dishes. Another example is the difference in New York Style Pizza and Chicago Style Pizza. In New York, the pizza crust is thin and the slices are large. In Chicago, the pizza is deep dish and the toppings are put on in the reverse order, cheese on bottom and sauce on top. You can also see differences in the types of food based on where people live. For example, people that live along the coastlines tend to eat a lot seafood, while someone in Montana or Texas is more likely to eat beef because it is easier to
get.
Transportation also shows the diversity in cultures. Many New Yorkers, those living in New York City, may go their entire life without driving a car. They tend to walk, ride the subway, or take a taxi everywhere they go. People living in Montana or Texas are more likely to have their driver’s license as soon as they are old enough because of the many open fields, ranches, and farms.
People move to the United States from all over the world because of our acceptance of diverse cultures. Although we may have different foods, languages, sports, or religions that we enjoy, we can each learn something from the other. Remember, everyone is just another piece to the great puzzle of the world.
