reveals attention, feelings, and the unveiling of characters to symbolize a deeper visual meaning behind the diegesis of a movie. Sound can present multiple meanings to an audience, but one of the purposes of sound is to connect the audience to the scene of a film.
For example, when the protagonist, Chris, and his girlfriend, Rose, get into a car wreck, there is a sudden transformation in pitch and volume to manifest the suspense of the scene. It enables the audience to become more attentive because the abrupt and clear difference of sound is recognized by the viewers. Most individuals tend to zone out when listening to the same things, therefore the manipulation of the distance of pitch and volume can trigger the attention of the audience. Also, sound can be contradictory to the viewers so that they can remember and tie the message that the movie is trying to proclaim. For instance, towards the beginning of the movie, a man was walking alone on the streets by himself and was taken by a stranger. The music of the abduction didn’t seem too intense because the film wanted to hide the crime of the scene. The cheerful tune that played seemed quiet at the beginning and gradually became louder as the man was struggling; similarly, when the car drove away the instruments in the background seemed more serious. This demonstrates the conflicting nature that the directors are highlighting because it allows the audience to remember the symbolism of a particular scene throughout the whole movie and later on they are able to create a link to the
movie. In most films, the visual appearance and sounds seal the feelings that the directors are trying to represent. For example, Chris would be hypnotized by listening to the sounds of the cup and spoon clicking. This consistent sound uncovers the trapped and controlled feelings that Chris cannot escape from. The sound doesn’t only proclaim the way Chris felt, but it revealed the type of person the directors were trying to perceive him as. For instance, Chris instantly was hypnotized by his girlfriend’s mom, which shows that he was an easy character to manipulate. Another example, is when Georgina was talking to Chris in his room. She had a sweet, and smooth tone with Chris, which seemed unusual because her facial expressions acknowledged the audience that she was hiding something. Based off of actuality, when a person cries they usually have a different tone, but Georgina didn’t and this displayed the hidden truth behind her character. Different music, voices, and instruments can generate vast amounts of meanings. Sound can divulge personal and internal feelings, gain attraction, and reveal a character’s mentality and personality. In Get Out, the functions of sound asserted that the realism of a film is not only about the visual aspect of a movie. Sound can amplify the thrill of a character and a scene, which helps attain the attraction of an audience. It can also enable the character and audience to form a similar feeling by specifying and manipulating the pitch, sound, and volume. Additionally, the inner personality of a character can be exhibited based off of their tone. Overall, sound is an important factor in attaining the real art of a film because it assimilates a mental, physical and emotional symbol to an individual.
