I can imagine that people are eager to know the world because living in the unknown world makes people anxious, and I think the purposes of science and religion can be the same, which are to answer the question, what the world is.
However, the roles of science and religion can be different and they can complement each other. In my opinion, the role of religion is that it provides people what people should be and what world can be like. In particular, a long time ago, there are so many unknown things, so people need religion to get explanation about the unknown world, to live with less anxiousness.
In contrast, the role of science is that it provides people with the explanation of the world based on the fact and logic. I think this can be better way to understand the world because this is more reliable explanation. However, this requires enormous research work to explain everything in the world, and it can be impossible to explain everything in the world forever. Therefore, people might need religion to answer their questions forever.
Even though there are many things left unknown, scientists has established reliable explanation in some topics that were unknown before. Therefore, it can conflict with existing explanation given by religion. The evolutionary theory, which we learned in this class, is one of these. From the viewpoint of that science and religion are complement, it is understandable that religious explanation of the world can change gradually along with the new scientific discoveries. In fact, according to the textbook, now, the official person of the Catholic Church admits, “evolutionary processes do occur.” In short, I think the purpose of science and religion is the same, which answers the question of people, who are eager to know what the world is. However, science and religion take different approach to answer this question. Science puts emphasis on the fact and logic while religion does not. From
