Human trafficking has become a wide spread problem that touches every continent. Today many people consider human trafficking to be a form of modern day slavery. It is defined by the United Nations as the recruitment, transport, allocation, concealing, or delivery of a person by indecorous means (such as force, abduction, deception, or intimidation) for an inappropriate reason such as forced labor or sexual exploitation (2004). There are different types of human trafficking the include forced labor, debt bondage, children soldiers, forced child labor, involuntary domestic servitude, and sex trafficking/prostitution. This paper will focus specifically on the issues of sex trafficking.

This theory states that individuals commonly act in their self-interest and chose to break the law after evaluating the latent risks against the rewards. Also, the rational choice theory of human trafficking states that criminals are rational individuals who make choices to break the law based on the costs and benefits involved in the process of crime perpetration (Majeed and Malik, 2017). Leary stated that Slave dealers, are rational individuals (2015). As such, several will persist in the occupation since they have no alternative means of producing as much revenue for as little risk (as stated in Leary,2015). According to Mandisa and Lanier offenders also must weigh other choices before deciding to commit the crime (2012). Traffickers often commit the crime because they know that the rewards outweigh the risk. As stated earlier traffickers can make billions of dollars from selling other individuals with out a high risk of getting caught. In addition, they know victims will not runaway since they are in a new country and they do not have the means to survive on their own. Often times victims of human trafficking are from different countries and do not know the language of the country they are in. Secondly, their trafficker would have taken their passport and threatened them to prevent their escape (Litam, 2017). Also, many do not have a way to support themselves once they escape that situation. Victims only receive a four year T-visa and benefits when they cooperate with the legal system (Barbagiannis, 2017). Often time’s victims do not want to face their trafficker or deal with the legal actions that drag on. This often leads to the victims going back because they have no time to rebuild their life or forget about the pain they went through. In addition, individuals who can find new work often do not make as much money and cannot afford to send money back home and support themselves. Since they cannot provided for both themselves and their families they often chose to go back to prostitution (Barbagiannis, 2017). They know that prostitution is the easiest way to gain the type of revenue they
