Summary of the Book:
In a world full of constantly advancing technology we often just trust that the information given to us by professionals is accurate. However, in this book, Gigerenzer reveals how this is not the case. This can often leave people in a vulnerable position. Fortunately, Gigerenzer provides a guide on how to prevent those types of misconstrued situations due to inaccurate information from ever taking place. He discusses a wide variety of topics such as contraceptives, abortions, gambling, cancers, stocks and finance throughout the book. He highlights the key similarity between these topics; uncertainty. In the final chapter entitled ‘Revolutionize School’ Gigerenzer argues that the ability to become risk aware can be bestowed on a person from a young age. This is further established by his use of ‘The Ravenclaw School of Magic’ experiment. In this he provides six questions for students between the ages of eight and ten to work on. He also adds in icons help the students understand what is happening. Each question gets progressively more difficult. The results show that through the use of icons children had a strong grasp on risk at an early stage of life. This can be built on throughout their school years in order for the younger generation to become more risk savvy adults, who in turn make better decisions. Gigerenzer believes that “If we spent the same amount of money developing a health literacy program to make children risk savvy as on developing new cancer drugs, I wager that the health literacy program would save many more lives from cancer”. Gigerenzer’s main argument is that a lack of “risk literacy” obstructs one’s ability to assess hazards and make decisions.
