I was moved by the Red Canna because the colors are eminently vibrant and bold but also complementary at the same time. The different tones and shade are brought together harmoniously using different brushing techniques, which perfectly captures how much beauty can be held inside of something so small. Having gone to several other art museums before and thinking they were boring or nothing special, I was surprised I held such an interest for a painting, especially for it not being in person. A very calming sense comes with painting or being surrounded by it, and seeing different creations that hold other people's thoughts, desires, and souls. To me, The Red Canna represents that. It appears quite simple, but that’s exactly what I like. It’s simplicity allows my mind to take over and imagine what the rest of the flower looked like, or what O’Keeffe was feeling when she painted it. I am able to look at this painting and change the flow of it so it fits my personal style to create a new, original work. This new work will often end up in a box or in the recycling, but in the moment I felt a spark of influence that made me want to forge something new.
