The Red Vineyard
The Red Vineyard of Vincent Van Gogh was the only painting sold by him during his lifetime. Looking at the painting, you can feel the richness of the color and how they harmonize the whole masterpiece. Van Gogh used the colors of orange and yellow together with green and blue which are analogous but at the same time are complementary with each other. It is also visible that the lighting is at low angle which somehow gives an impression of an afternoon or sunset vibes to the painting. In this painting, it is evident that there are lines that separate each entity to one another. Above is a horizontal line that divides the sky to the land and on the right side is a curve line that detaches the land to the river. An implied line that organizes an artwork is applied in the painting. The peasants are aligned diagonally, horizontally and vertically to each other. The texture of the painting is impasto.

The Red Vineyard was painted purely from Van Gogh’s memory and imagination, when he happened to pass by a vineyard one evening. For me the painting expresses peace and harmony and simplicity of life. The peasants were basically harvesting crops and gathering fishes to store for future use and as if they are one family working together. In this painting everyone – male and female - were working harmoniously and doing their part to provide for their family and community. Based on the time that Van Gogh painted this masterpiece, I believe that his image here shows an evening time of the day and they are probably preparing for winter – a time where crops won’t grow because of the

When comparing the lines in the Vincent Van Gogh’s The Starry Night painting and Sol LeWitt’s the Wall Drawing No. 681, the lines are the opposite. In the Starry Night painting the lines of the sky are very curvy and flowing, but the lines of the buildings are very straight. The artist in this painting is showing you a vision he has had during the time he was in the asylum. The lines of the sky are erratic, and it shows how the artist was feeling very unstable during the time he painted the piece. You can feel how peaceful the buildings are, but the sky is not peaceful. The artist is fighting with himself, and it shows in the painting. The Wall Drawing No.681 shows very straight and precise lines. The artist is feeling very controlled as he painted the piece. The lines appear to be mathematical, each of the lines are the same in length and distance. As you look at each of the lines, the colors are used more than once, but the tense of the color has changed. The lines in the piece are very organized.…

Action lies in the relationship between the artist’s choice of colours, space, and lines. He uses vibrant and rich colours to grab the observer’s attention and to create visual interest. Carmichael made excellent use of space by organizing the composition of the landscape. A foreground, middle ground, and background created depth in his work. Line is a vital aspect of movement and dynamic activity in the painting and was demonstrated through the varying lengths of bold, horizontal brush strokes. Collectively, all these formal elements, the use of contrasting temperatures of colour, thick lines, and solid forms all encapsulate the work’s energetic…

Arkansas Barley Fields illustrates multiple visual elements of art and also principles of design. The visual elements employed consists of space, time and motion, and line. Multiple lines are shown in this painting; regular and irregular lines, implied line and communicative lines. Freud uses natural and organic lines for the landscape of this artwork. The grass located in the front of the barley and the barley itself illustrates irregular lines. Irregular lines at first, may seem chaotic and maybe even scribbled, which is exactly what seems to be the issue in the illustration of the barley. Though the lines seem scribbled, the painting as a whole is controlled and easy to view and comprehend. Irregular lines can be described as free and unrestrained and are defined as the reflection of the wildness of nature, chaos and accident, unlike regular lines, which express control and planning. Regular lines are illustrated in the bark of the trees. The lineup of the trees not only express regular lines, but also implied line. In this artwork, implied line is shown in the lineup of the trees and also in the lineup of the barley. There is not an actual line portrayed but the way that the trees and barley are positioned causes an implied line. Since Freud uses irregular lines in the illustration of the barley, the "chaos" would also be conveyed by using communicative diagonal lines, which…

The reddish strokes in the space above the hat could represent anxiety or uncertainty, which is what his facially expression seems to present to the viewer as well. The grayish paint strokes represented in the negative space outside van Gogh’s image sharply contrasts with the orange, yellow and reddish colors in the facial area and hat, which adds to the overall boldness and vibrancy of the painting. In addition, the space appears to be illusionistic, as the painter depicts an illusion (van Gogh himself) of the three-dimensional spatial world on a two-dimensional…

This painting was created by William Turner. He got his inspiration from the Lake in Petworth. In this painting, you can see some of his brush strokes and lines like in the sky. But on the trees to the side and the bucks down in the field are somewhat detailed and they are not just a stroke of a brush. He tried to make sure that you were able to tell what it was that you were looking at. This piece of art is very interesting to look at because you have to look close to see what all is happening in this painting.…

Throughout the ages, art has been one of many ways to communicate with our history. Every painting, drawing, sculpture, etc. tells us a story of that time period and if we look hard enough, we can even feel what the people of that time may have been feeling. In this essay, two pieces of art will be introduced and interpreted: The Milkmaid (circa 1657-1658) by Johannes Vermeer which is a Dutch Baroque oil painting that 's 45.5 x 41 cm located in Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands and Woman Baking Bread (1854) by Jean-Francois Millet which is a French Realism oil painting that 's 55 x 46 cm located in Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller, Otterlo, Netherlands. The agenda of this comparison is to understand different styles between the Dutch Baroque and French Realism, and to show how Vermeer and Millet deal with the same every day domestic theme in a different way.…

As such, he used many bright colors, loosened his brush strokes, and emphasized the application of paint on canvas. Thus, his style is quite consistent with the time period, yet Van Gogh did have an iconic signature to his works. This signature is his thick application of paint, called impasto. Impasto is a word of Italian origin, and means “paste” or “mixture.” It is frequently used in describing paintings where the paint is so thickly applied that brush strokes or palette knife are clearly visible, and this is clearly seen in Van Gogh’s work. The lasting effect is a painting that almost looks three dimensional, which I saw in the Wheat Fields after the Rain (The Plain of Auvers). This use of impasto allows for the painting to have more depth because of lighting and shadows that can influence the over all composition. Therefore, with this technique we can see the emotions that Van Gogh wishes to convey in the way he paints his clouds or the fields themselves. Gustav Klimt’s piece, Orchard, has many artistic techniques that were used during the Art Nouveau period. Klimt painted the piece on a large square canvas, with an elevated viewpoint, with employed elongated parallel brush strokes, which contrast with the lozenge-like strokes and blotches of flowers and foliage, overall creating a patterned effect that can be seen in…

The elements of art used in this work balance out the work as a whole. The components such as the canyons, the sky, and the river belong to one another. These natural elements embody nature that form a harmonious whole. The colors used blend together to create a smooth, even layer of color. The earthy tones used are true to life and represent nature. The painting shows a contrast of light and dark colors on the sides of the canyons. The colors start out light and go dark towards the bottom of the canyon. The variety of lines in the work show height and width. The horizontal lines give a feeling of peace and a sense of space. The lines depict sections of the landscape, which recede into space. The vertical lines create a sense of height. The lines vary in width and length leading the eye around towards the top of the canyons. The thin and light brushstrokes…

John Steinbeck’s novel, The Grapes of Wrath, is a moving account of the social plight of Dustbowl farmers and is widely considered an American classic. The novel takes place during the depression of the 1930s in Oklahoma and all points west to California. Steinbeck uses the Joad family as a specific example of the general plight of the poor farmers. The Joads are forced off of their farm in Oklahoma by the banks and drought, and they, like many other families of the time, head out for the promised land of California. They endure much hardship along the way, and they finally make it to California only to find that work is scarce and human labor and life are cheap. Tom Joad, the eldest son in the family, starts the book freshly out of jail and slowly evolves from selfish goals to a sense of an ideal worldly purpose in uniting people against injustice. Jim Casy, an errant preacher who is accepted into the Joad family early into the story, changes his beliefs to include all people in a sort of oversoul, as he helps to organize the workers to battle the extreme injustice done onto them by the farm owners and discriminating locals. Whereas the Joads start out as one family, by the end of the story their family becomes one with other families who are weathering the same plight of starvation and senseless violence. In The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck emphasizes the power of groups over the individual’s power to survive poverty and violence through character evolution, plot and the use of figurative and philosophical language.…

The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh is consistent of his typical artwork. He uses the lines free and loose making it an expression of his contour lines. The spacing between the stars and the curving contours making it a dot to dot effect. Van Gogh’s, The Starry Night” portrays his personal emotion. He writes to his brother about his painting almost as if he would be confused himself about the painting. The village is dark but at the same time it is peaceful compared to the dramatic sky life. In Sol Le Witts, Wall Drawing it uses an ordered form and symmetrical form called classical lines. The line Sol Le Witts uses is considered a connection between two separate points. Although his work is displayed throughout various art museums, the actual work is not his own. Le Witts has the ideas and then gives the workers instructions on what he wants done. This reflects his personality in the way that his art work is controlled. The line form he uses is symmetrical. Sol Le Witt is unlike Van Gogh’s when it comes to his personality. In which Le Witt’s personality is logical and Van Gogh’s is emotional and chaotic. Both artists’ have clearly shown their personality in their art work through their different line forms and expressions.…
