1. 1:32:22 – 1:32:35 Shot starts with wide shot of Tono lighting a match in a dark room. Mrs. Lautmannova is asleep on the bed right next to him. He begins to shake her awake calling her name. She awakes, startled and asks who it is as she turns and reaches for the light.
2. 1:32:35 – 1:32:39 Wide shot from slightly behind Mrs. Lautmannova. Tono urgently tells her, while she is sitting up in bed, that he has come to warn her.
3. 1:32:39 – 1:32:42 Wide shot over the shoulder of Tono as he says that they will take her tomorrow. She shrugs it off and waves her hand saying that he has been drinking.
4. 1:32:42 – 1:32:47 Wide shot behind Mrs. Lautmannova. Tono agrees that he had been drinking but insists that she goes into hiding.
5. 1:32:47 – 1:33:03 Establishing shot of Tono sitting beside the bed and Mrs. Lautmannova sitting up in the bed. Mrs. Lautmannova calls him drunk and waves her hand as he gets up and walks away, off camera to the left. She says she’ll hide him and tells him to go into the shop, she would join him, as she puts her coat on still sitting in bed.
6. 1:33:03 – 1:33:25 Wide shot of Tono in the shop glancing out the store window nervously as he sees the flashes of light and hears the singing of the Nazi celebrating. He walks out from behind the counter and sits on a chair as the camera follows. He takes out alcohol from his coat jacket, opens it but then changes his mind and closes it and puts it back. The light turns on. He looks to the left and says to not turn the lights on.
7. 1:33:25 – 1:33:52 Wide shot, slight angle up, of Mrs. Lautmannova walking in with sheets and pillows piled messily in her arms. She brings them to the counter and Tono walks into the shot asking what she is doing and if the bedding is for him. She begins to make a bed on the counter saying that things happen. She continues as Tono looks stressed, saying people quarrel the young and old, but that’s just life. Tono

This cuts to a dark medium-wide shot of what appears like a silhouette of the character. With a pan, it remains dark until a desk light is turned on, revealing a crowded and seemingly disorganized office space. Another cut reveals a medium-close shot of the main character with overhead lighting that is supposed to be coming solely from the desk lamp. This relatively stationary shot, only panning when the characters moves, focuses on the distraught character trying to comfort and make sense of the proceeding events to the clip. This relatively dialogue free shot reveals not much to the audience; only that this character would like to record observations. This shot is very crowded with visuals which also add to the confusing theme being portrayed. One final cut to a close up shot with similar lighting finally gives the audience insight into the mind of the character as they begin noting their observations. This shot is clear from distractions and gives the audience some relief and closure that has been build up with the proceeding cuts. Altogether there are 5 different shots being presented, all of which have very distinct length and composure that proceed to confusion and closure to the audience, as well as a smooth development…

In a way, McCarthyism is similar to the play, The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller. Although the actions taken against suspected communists were not as strict as those during the Salem witch trials, they were still vicious and shattered many reputations of well-liked men and women. This also occurred during 1692 and 1693, the years of the witch trials. There were many differences and similarities between these two topics. The death penalty was the number one difference, along with the after effects of these events and their logic during the time of the occurrences. The similarities were greed and self-preservation. It also gave many an excuse to act on personal grudges bore with one another.…

In the witch trials and McCarthyism both had innocent people that were wrongly accused, had their reputations ruined, put in jail, or worse. The accused had a very little choices after being accused. In both theses cases, many people were also wrongly accused of being a witch or being a communist. Stated in ‘The Crucible’ Abigail and Betty were accused many of being “with the devil”. Once one person accused another it started, “whole country’s talkin’ of witch craft!” Mccarthy was one that accused others of being communist to help stop the fear of communist, to stop uprising against then government, and to stop espionage. The choices were to: one to confess, and live and not be jailed, two to name others, or three be silent and be put in jail…

In the 1940s, America was hysterical over communism with McCarthyism everywhere. Author, Arthur Miller felt that the situation had many similarities to the Salem Witch Trials. In both the Salem Witch Trials and McCarthyism fear, hysteria, and danger were common. A type of evidence called “spectral evidence” was being used in both situations and Miller used his play, The Crucible, as an allegory for McCarthyism to tell one story with an even deeper meaning. McCarthyism and the Salem Witch trials relied on public hysteria and spectral evidence to influence people and control them.…

Between February 1692 and May 1693, in several towns in the state of Massachusetts, dozens of people were accused of witchcraft. Nineteen people were sentenced to death by the state government because of all the villagers that accused each other of being possessed by the devil. In contemporary times, these events are generally known as the Salem witch trials. A few hundred years later, in the early 1950’s, author Arthur Miller wrote a play about this part of American history called The Crucible. In this analysis I will argue that The Crucible, a play with hysteria and paranoia as main themes, partly represents the McCarthy Era, in which hundreds of United States inhabitants were accused of being communistic without hard evidence.…

In addition to Jack’s death and dramatizing it, there is the moment right before he dies when the camera zooms into the faces of Jack and John. This close-up shot highlights anguish on Jack’s features and the guilt-ridden and sorrow marred on John’s. It accurately conveys to the audience the tension in the moment and what the characters felt. An accurate depiction of feelings is not only displayed by close-up shots, but by a cut scene that emphasizes the juxtaposition of a dark room and a near dejected, dark atmosphere to a lively room with bright colours and upbeat sounds. Before John reveals that he made the record, the gloomy feeling in the living room he stumbles into in his drunken state makes you believe he didn’t make the record, however he ecstatically tells his wife that he did and it immediately cuts to the next seen where he goes on to perform. It shows that in that moment of darkness, his life takes a turn for the best and becomes brighter and livelier. Different film techniques help to put Johnny Cash under different lights and to increase the authenticity of Joaquins acting and the overall representation to the…

McCarthyism is defined as the practice of making accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence. It also means "the practice of making unfair allegations or using unfair investigative techniques, especially in order to restrict dissent or political criticism." This was used in the Cold War by U.S. Senator McCarthy to try and eliminate communists in the United States. It was used with little evidence, and it was in itself a witch hunt like those described in “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller. Arthur Miller was inspired directly by McCarthyism when he was writing The Crucible. The many claims of witchcraft made by characters in The Crucible--lacking sufficient evidence--share great similarities with the “witch hunts” of the McCarthy Era.…
