Day 4
How does Thucydides’ representation of the Athenians compare with the representation of the Athenians on the Parthenon Frieze?
Thucydides describes the Athens as being superior to the other states while the Parthenon Frieze describes them as a whole and united and the figures they respected. Thucydides mainly talks about the warriors and the men of Athens while the Parthenon Frieze depicts people of all status. Thucydides makes the Athens seem arrogant and has the Athens believe that they are above all the other states. When the Athens go to all the states and provide their justification of being the head of the empire, it reminds me of when the Europeans came to America and decided to “rule” over the Native Americans and force them to do what they said. It also reminds me of when Europeans came into India and Africa and decided to “teach” them the proper way of living and empowering them. Thucydides also describes Athens to be very concerned with their status. An example of this was when the Athens felt threaten from Lacedaemonians commands. He also describes Athens as being the most powerful nation of the time; he implies that they have the most powerful navy, superior soldiers, and also a well built government system. He puts the Athens on a pedestal by portraying them as being the most superior race in comparison to the other states. He depicts the men of the Athens as having more courage and devotion and also having more honor because of their battle in the Persian War. He also portrays them as a courageous and well-built nation.
In comparison to Thucydides, who only talks about the warrior men, the Parthenon Frieze shows a representation all the citizens of Athens. Similarly to Thucydides, the Parthenon Frieze also depicts the people in a particularity higher representation by illustrating the people with perfect physique and beauty on the sculpture. The Parthenon Frieze also shows that the Athens had a close relationship with the god because
