Fur trading in the west was a very dangerous business to be in because little was known. People would hire those who knew the land because they’d scout it before helping out the others. Beyond the frontier was a lawless and wild “world”. Territories in the West were occupied by the Natives that had claimed that land years ago. The story of Hugh Glass was “embroidered” as it passed from writer to writer until eventually it was adapted into the novel “The Revenant” by Michael Punke. They outnumbered the 70 men that Ashley had with him. Hugh Glass’ story has never been complete and little is known about what actually happened at the supposed “true events”. What is known however is that Glass did happen to participate in a group led by Ashley up to the Missouri River. Glass went out to get food for the group and was attacked/mauled by a bear. Glass was eventually left behind by two men who were put in charge of him and Glass was not one to let go of a grudge. Glass was a man who could read and write but despite this, he didn’t write any of his story/experiences which made it hard to pinpoint what was completely true and what wasn’t. A publishing group called the Port Folio were the ones to have written his story and since then has been changed and changed.

One of the first and foremost inaccuracies is Glass’ Pawnee wife and son who only existed in the movie. It is not known if Glass did have a Pawnee wife but it is proven that he did not have a son. In the beginning of the movie, after getting attacked by the Arikara Tribe warriors, it is shown that Glass tells the men on the expedition to leave the boats and get to the mountains however in real life Ashley and Henry were the ones to have mentioned abandoning the boats and riding to the mountains on horseback. Also, Glass was mauled by a bear in the summer but in the movie it is placed in the winter to help the actors get into “character”. The movie does embody some of the primary events in Glass’ life but adds more to appeal to the
