Also he did no matter what it took because he had formed a strong bond with Shiloh ever since they met so it would make sense that he would do anything for Shiloh. An example can be that one way Marty would hide Shiloh was he makes a home for him in an old shed up the hill from his house and that is where he stayed for much of the story. Also every time that they had dinner Marty would save food for Shiloh so he can eat and that shows how strong the bond was between the…

The story is told from Lyman Lamartine’s point of view as he recounts the relationship he had with his older brother, Henry. He says how they both bought a red Oldsmobile convertible on impulse and traveled the country with it. He recalled it as a very happy and carefree time between the brothers. Then Henry went off to fight in the Vietnam War and when he returned he was a very changed man. He was depressed and lost interest in everything, including the car and his brother. When Lyman realizes the relationship between him and his brother will never be the same, he takes a hammer and beats the car up so it is in horrible condition. Henry sees the broken car and fixes it up. Once finished, the boys drive the car to a lake and Henry tries to give Lyman complete ownership of the car but Lyman constantly refuses. The brothers enjoy a tiny moment of laughter and hopefulness and after spending a couple good minutes together, Henry tells Lyman that he needs to cool off, and he jumps into the river. She is very emotional and confused about what she wants and about what is going on. Norma Jean is used to not having Leroy around very much when he was truck driving but he is now home all the time and she doesn't know what to think of it and wants him to find another job. She is very distant with what she is thinking. Norma Jean is driven by having independence, "In the mornings, Norma Jean disappears, leaving a cooling place in the bed" (236). Norma Jeans relates to history differently than the other two characters because she strives to gain her mothers acceptance and wants her to be happy with the way she is living her life. Mason, who is the author of Shiloh, provides an important element of setting that helps signify the deteriorating relationship between Leroy Moffitt and his wife Norma Jean as well as the mood and essence of the story. Throughout the story, the author mentions the characters’ home. In Leroy’s world, home would represent togetherness, love, affection, and comfort because he would now spend time with Norma and feel secure. Ultimately, this would display a sign of a growing relationship. Ironically, home represents peculiarity and discomfort for Norma. According to the passage, “They never speak about their memories of Randy, which have almost faded, but now that Leroy is home all the time, they sometimes feel awkward around each other” (Mason…

In the short story, Story of an Hour, Chopin illustrates that societal expectations will subdue and repress one’s identity. Firstly, in the very first paragraph it is noted that Mrs. Mallard is afflicted with heart trouble; naturally, one would presume that she is of quite some age, however, in the eighth paragraph it reads, “She was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength.” (Chopin, 8th paragraph) This comes as a surprise to the reader as it was originally inferred that she was much older but now that the reader becomes aware of her age, they are able to deduce how much psychological and emotional strain must have been pressed upon her to have lines that “bespoke repression” at such a young age. As well, Mrs. Mallard may have been inclined to enjoy those first few moments of newfound freedom in solitude, as she would not like anyone to see her in peace after her husband’s death. This sentence accurately illustrates how societal norms have repressed her identity, causing her to even hide from her sister to avoid questioning.…
