Choice changes one’s life.
According to Merriam-Webster, choice means “the act of picking or deciding between two or more possibilities” and life means “the experience of being alive”. "The Road Not Taken" centers on the concept of choice. The path that the speaker is walking on is splitting in two directions, and he has to decide which way to go. This path is not just in the woods, but also represents a decision in his life. Something in his life is changing, forcing him to make a choice. Yet he has a really hard time deciding and is full of doubts since he does not want to miss the opportunity and wants to choose the right road. Whether or not he has a reason why the choice he makes is better, he has to make it. And that choice changes his life.
Life is a journey with a choice of many roads to travel. Choices we made cannot be redone. Every moment of our life, we make choices, which determine our life. Just like trying to pick a path when we're driving or walking, we've all had to choose from different paths in life: which job to take, which college to go to and so on. And for every metaphorical road we take in life, there is a road not taken – the club we didn't join, the class we didn't take, the words we didn't say. We do not really know where a road will lead you until you take it. There are no guarantees. This is one of the most important things we need to realize about life. Loving someone with all one’s heart does not guarantee that it would be returned. Gaining fame and fortune does not guarantee happiness. There are too many possible outcomes, which we really cannot control. The only thing we have power over is the choices that we will make.
“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood”. The speaker is going to have to make a choice and walk down one of these roads, leaving the other one behind. The diverging is symbolic of the distancing between the two decisions. Both are far apart, yet they started from the same point. This line
