In the novel Holden visits a museum, in which it showed his desire for everything to stay the same. His opinion is that children are more sincere and amusing than adults. However, Holden knowns that kids will soon grow up and become adults. Which is why he tries to keep kids innocent. This is exactly why Holden likes museums because everything there is constant and does not change. Every time he sees children, he thinks
of how they will change. Which makes him unhappy that people inevitably undergo changes and regrets each time a person goes in the museum, because when they came out they would be different in some way, unlike the displays of people in the museum.
Holden believes that the adult world is corrupt and selfish. Which is why he refers to most people as "phonies" as they do not look for the best interests of others, whereas children are innocent and see the best in everything. At the beginning of the novel, Holden says that he enjoyed listening to his older brother, D.B stories. Until his older brother moved to Hollywood to write scripts for films. Afterwards, Holden refers to D.B as a "prostitute" since he sold his talent for money causing him to see his brother as a phony. Unlike adults Holden viewed children as careless and innocence beings. Holden mourns and misses the feeling of childhood because during that time he has fond memories of Allie before he died.
Holden isolates himself because he feels as he is excluded from and victimized by the world around him. In other words, Holden feels as he does not belong in the adult world. So he isolates himself to protect himself. He uses his isolation as a way to show that he is better than the phonies who conform themselves into the standardized structure of society.
Holden lives in a delusional world because he fears the transition to adulthood. That is why he despises change because people move on and grow up. Holden also hates adults because they are selfish and filthy unlike children who see the best in everything. Which is why he isolates himself to avoid the conformism of society.
