can cause the child to not properly know how to react around other children which is not good. The child may lash out and injure or hurt other children at daycare or at school because they cannot control themselves when they get angry. Children that are not receiving medication should go to behavioral practices to help keep them safe and the children around them safe when they cannot control their actions. Prescription drugs have a very fast ready availability which is not necessarily good because you don’t have to show a prescription. Some drugs such as Adderall and Ritalin are on standby as the child needs it which is not always good. If someone walks into their nearby pharmacy they can easily say that their child is on one of need those medications without a prescription. People are starting to abuse this and is causing a massive shortage of the medication at pharmacies. In Canada, there is a waiting list of up to two years. That list contains the families that cannot afford to pay for practices and or medication privately in public clinics. In many cases, doctors from Canada, recommend behavioral therapy rather than trying medication due to the age of the child and many of the side effects that can be brought upon the child.
The younger the child is, the more time the child has to deal with the side effects from after starting to take medication. For the child's safety and health, doctors really push for behavioral therapy, rather than just putting them on medication. Trying behavioral therapy is a great way to start. It shows you and your child if he/she can be cured or treated without rushing medication and starting a chemical dependancy on …show more content…
them.
Starting a chemical dependency is very hazardous to children's health. Doctors really try to avoid this medication on younger children that have not yet tried to work with a therapist. Working with that therapist first can help with the behavior of the child. It may not fully work but helps when the child starts the medicine and may forget a day. Forgetting one day of medication without therapy can make the child very aggressive because they do not know how to control or think what they are doing is wrong. They do not know right from wrong because they have not acted any different way.
Taking medication as a child ages 2-5 start to see side effects around the age of 6-8. These side effects that are taking place on the child are not healthy for children that age. Some of the side effects are moodiness, poor appetite, aggression, behavioral problems with other children or adults and insomnia. Kids ages 5-13 need all of those things to grow at a healthy rate and mature as the child should. As of today, long term effects are not well researched but researchers are working hard so that kids do not have to suffer from them any longer.
Around Canada and America many children doctors have asked governments to increase the amount the school has for special education and psychologists. Doctor Christopher, the president of the Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent's psychiatry has been asking and researching for many years. Dr. Christopher thinks ADHD is a mental illness that needs to be cured just as bad as any other disease a person or child can have. For special education, on the other hand, $22.6 million dollars in school funding cuts have been enforced in 2016 around the Ontario Canada area.
In most cases for the child the medication works almost instantly. For the kids that are overly active or do not focus well the medication can take up to 3-5 days of everyday use to start working. For the children that are overly active the families, more often than not, decide to bypass the therapy their doctor might prescribe because it takes longer to work. Therapy without a doubt will take time but what the family does not think about is how the kid will out without the medicine once they have started. Behavioral therapy is a great process that will help the child be able to function correctly when off or forget their medication. If the child can properly function without medication their doctor may even take them off because they no longer need it on an everyday basis.
On the parents side of their child having ADHD is not only having the child trying to fix themselves it’s the parents too. Some parents want to educate themselves too so that they know what to do in a situation that may come up. Parents are starting to go to boot camps to improve their management on their child's behavior. Psychologist sessions are all out of pocket costs; another reason parents choose not to do therapy. Hourly they can run from $150-$200 unless you have a private health care plan.
Some kids that can fully benefit from the medication are not getting them. The percentages of kids with full scale ADHD not receiving medication are crazy numbers. Boys not receiving medication are in the 58th percentile and for girls it is the 45th percentile. Also looking at those number the percent of children ages 4-14 taking medication has tripled. With the numbers for children taking medication going up the manufacturing has too gone up. The stimulant drug methylphenidate has been noticed on its rapid increase in the U.S..
The twin rate in the U.S. being diagnosed with ADHD has also gone up. Out of 1,510 children 302 boys and 57 girls have met all standards for ADHD. Even though medication production is at an all time high there are still kids not getting the help or medication they need. Children with ADHD need help at home, in public and most important at school around all the other kids. Some parents think that the health professionals are not doing a good job at explaining ADHD to the child and family. They are blaming that on the reason they are not medicating or having the child go through therapy because they do not know all of the information. People that are not properly informed on this illness do not know the risks of not putting their children through therapy or medication. Not every child is bad to the point of having to have medication it all the time but if they have problems at school you should try something to make your child better.
The next study doctors want to do is research children close in age and/or twins in the same family to see if it is a trait. This study will answer so many questions and help to find a medication or a cure. This study will see if it is genetic or environmental. To be sure on the results they will need twins with the illness but siblings close in age will help just as much. If genes are found hopefully treatments and cures will be made for specific children that will help with the ADHD they are suffering from. This mental illness is the most studied disorder for children. So many doctors are devoted to this study so that they can someday help these children.
With ADHD being the most researched and prescribed childrens disease in the world there are still children not getting the help they need. The safety and efficacy of stimulants is studied widely to help find symptoms and find treatments to help the after effects. These children that are taking treatment are receiving a combination of therapy and medication. Both of these help in which the child has more options instead of being dependant on just one. Out of 600 elementary students studies showed 9 out of 10 showed improvement after taking medication or therapy. No treatment at all for children can lead to the risk of poor brain function; the brain needs proper stimulation to mature at the full potential of the child.
ADHD causes learning delays, academic failures and leads to a high percentage of school dropouts. Kids need to be treated because if not they are at the high risk of having many social problems. The social problems include reckless driving, drug use, alcohol use, smoking, having difficulty making relationships and trouble following the law. “Children who received 14 months of treatment and an extended follow-up for 6 more years is currently underway. Results have demonstrated that methylphenidate with careful medication management was safe and effective for the length of the trial and was more effective than intensive behavioral treatments alone in relieving symptoms. The combination of medication management and intensive behavioral treatment was particularly advanced when children with ADHD had symptoms of other disorders as well.”
ADHD has been overlooked for many years and is now starting to become doctors priorities.
Doctors are wanting to help these children to live a happy and full life. Children are being recognized and are getting the help they need and deserve now. Doctors have put $143-$266 billion dollars in research and things are only getting better.
