The use of chemical weapons in World War I were cased by the quickly growing need to end stalemate, periods of time where during warfare there was no action nor movement. This had become increasing popular and occurred often in the western and southern fronts. Stalemate was due to technological developments that favored defensive tactics such a barbed wire. In addition, poison gas was deployed to cause murders on an extensive scale and invade soldiers that would have otherwise not been reachable. An illustration of this would be the dugouts created by soldiers to successfully hide from fire, however the introduction of poison gas allowed troops to reach those hiding in the dugouts
and kill members from their opposing side.
2) Why did different nations expect World War I to be quickly resolved?
Different nations expected World War I to be quickly resolved due to the intense nationalism they felt for their country. Allegiance to one’s country was a main factor during nationalism and put their nation's financial and political needs before anything else. This propelled nations to do whatever was necessary to gain new territories and imperialize. Nationalism also led to the belief that backing down from the war would lead to a huge embarrassment for their country and more often than not, pushed away from it. Moreover, the nations had never experienced a war to the large of a degree before and had no idea to expect World War I to run on for so long.
3) In your view, was World War I a just war-- a war that is worth the suffering and loss of life? Do you think that modern wars are justified? Explain.
In my view, World War I was not a just war, and had not been worth the suffering and loss of life in the end. This conflict resulted in a death poll that was over 38 million, a number hat for the most part, could have been avoided with other means to settle this dispute. This was war was motivated by imperial greed, militarism and nationalism. Furthermore, It led to countless deaths and forced other to sacrifice their lives for their country. Modern wars today are not justified as well. Especially today, there should be other ways to settle disputes rather than engaging in batter. Nations have no reason to take the lives of individuals and attempt a other avenues such as diplomacy to settle disagreements.
