A range of class workers including whites, blacks and women of different ages joined the Knights of Labor. The workers in the organization went on strikes, boycotts, took political commands, and assisted educational and social activities. The purpose of the Knights of Labor organization was to push and promote the idea of labor rights. Many inspirational writers to action in setting a couple of ideas to promote change in society. The first was Henry George which gave the idea of “single tax.” The “single tax” which would cover any other tax and increase the value of homes. The second was Laurence Gronlund who wrote a book named Cooperative Commonwealth which exposed his readers to socialist views. Lastly was Edward Bellamy, which had view on Interdependence vs. autonomy and believed that inequality should be eliminated. On May third during the protest four protesters were killed by policemen. On May fourth, this specific group of people gathered one more time to protest the killing of the four human beings that were killed the day before. All of the angered people gathered in Haymarket Square where an individual threw a bomb and killed a policeman. In effect of these fetal activities people declared the labor movement as malicious actions. Eight individuals were convicted with weak facts of the death of the policeman. The Haymarket Affair lead to the sporadic independent labor activities. The most famous campaign was when Henry George ran for mayor. He stood by his view of single tax and supported strikes and went against activist going to jail. Unfortunately, George did not win but it marked the pike in the Knight of Labor.
