The blacks moved to the north in 1916 for better jobs. Before blacks got there, they arose before WWI. A lot of the blacks were sharecroppers, farm laborers and tenants. Chicago, New York along with other cities noticed that their black population was expanding a lot. Southern workers left to work in the factories. Some states like Pennsylvania needed workers so bad that they paid the moving of 12,000 blacks. But the northern workers lost about five million people who decided to leave for the army. WWI caused a draft in the northern factories and most african americans moved to get more job opportunities. There was better education and facilities for the cities.
President Woodrow Wilson was serving during this period of time and the great migration was one of the important events during his serving time. Immigration of WWI cut 300,000 from Europe to America, This continued throughout the war. During WWI NAACP led the war to discrimination and segregation and prevent africans americans in the military. NAACP stands for National Association for the Advancement of Colored people. This was found August 1908. They work for elimination of racial discrimination , fair housing and employment and education etc to help blacks.
About 400,000 blacks were drafted during the war and 42,000 were served overseas troops including the harlem hellfighters. Hellfighters were people who fought on the front lines of the war. Famous names of the people who fought were Henry Lincoln Johnson, Needham Roberts and James Reese Europe. Johnson was the first african american who was in the war of 1916. He suffered 21 wounds and saved another soldier while being hurt. Johnson came back to the war and tried to make a life for himself. He had experienced in strange and distant land. He was lucky to survive from the many wounds he had. Johnson died in 1929 at 32 years old. His nickname was the “Black death”. Needham Roberts died April 18th, 1949. Roberts was a son of a pastor. He left his job as a drug clerk in 1917 for the army for serve our country. Roberts was only between 15 -16 years old that like most of the kids in our class. But he lied to the main person and told them he was 19 so he could. He was sent to france, where he got under the control of them. Johnson, who saved Roberts in the Argonne forest. James Reese was the first african who made music in the U.S. Along with the other two he joined the New York National Guard. Reese was one of the well known blacks for organization. A Clef Club which was at the end of 53th street was owned by the union and federal organization. James was the first to be elected president at the Clef Club along with a conductor from its own orchestra.
