The William Tell Overture was written to open an opera composed by Gioachino Rossini. It was premiered in 1829 when Rossini was 37 years old. William Tell was one of last of the 39 operas he wrote in his lifetime. Afterwards, he went into a time of semi-retirement and only continued to compose cantatas, secular music and secular vocal music. The overture is approximately twelve minutes and has four parts that transition from one part to the next without any breaks.
