Band vs. Orchestra
Band vs. Orchestra When you hear the word “orchestra,” you typically think of the “Trans-Siberian Orchestra,” or the “New York Philharmonic,” but when you hear “concert band,” what comes to mind? Maybe, you think of a marching band you once saw at halftime on your Sunday game or the high school band that played the boring, dragging tune at your graduation ceremony. Although the two ensembles are closely related, the main difference in the two orchestras is instrumentation. A concert band, unlike an orchestra, has no stringed instruments. Depending on the type of band, there can be as many as 750 members, for instance, Allen Eagle Marching Band in Allen, Texas. Where an orchestra has only three or four trumpets, a band can as many as twenty (as well as that many clarinets and trombones). Bands also use a variety of instruments including: bass clarinet, soprano sax, bass trombone, alto flute, etc.
Traditional orchestral usually contains between 80-100 musicians. Strings are the largest group consisting of violins, violas, cellos, and basses, with violins playing the melody. Woodwinds and brass comprise the most common instruments: clarinet, flute, piccolo, oboe, bassoon, trombone, trumpet, French horn, tuba, and percussion. An orchestra can also include harp and piano as featured instruments or accompaniments. In addition, orchestras do not have to contain brass or woodwind instruments. Smaller groups of 50 or less are called chamber orchestras, but are not as common as full symphonies. The word “orchestra” can also be used in a less formal way such as the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. Concert bands can be broken into many subcategories such as marching band, jazz band, symphonic band, and no matter how many members there are in the band, the name does not change. Orchestra music – due to instrumentation – can last up to half an hour, even longer sometimes. Orchestra music is typically classical music written in many segments, each segment lasting

A good electric guitar player is part of the group as well. They also at one point had a woman with a nice singing voice perform with them. She sing several songs with them. Next, I found out why they had the Bad New Jazz & Blues Orchestra again at the festival. In the band, one member acted as their conductor. Several individuals play saxophone. A couple of individuals plays horns. Three trumbones are involve, a woman sings well in the band and unlike Space Train had key board player in it. The trumpet players were good and I am not what you call a fan of them. In fact, I like the singing of this woman better than the singer in Space Train. It was very well organized orchestra. People in the audience must have agree because a couple…

Music, in itself, is its own language; for some it’s easy to understand, others take it to the next level and add choreographed movement to it, such as marching bands. An average marching wind ensemble practice begins with a simple stretch and review of the basic marching techniques. They begin one week before the fall semester starts. Normal “band camp” days involve basic technique practices on the field in the morning, rehearsal after lunch, and a combination of the marching and music after their dinner. They meet three days a week during the fall semester; two and a half hours each session, depending on whether the directors think it’s necessary. They must learn a pre-game performance, their halftime show, and all stand-tunes (the short songs that are…

I had the opportunity to attend a concert in Jordan Hall, a beautiful and antiquated concert hall at the New England Conservatory in Boston. The ensemble consisted of the New England Conservatory’s very own Youth Philharmonic Orchestra and was led by David Loebel, the conductor. This was a full symphony orchestra with woodwind players, string players, brass players, and percussion players. The orchestra was grouped with the strings in the first row, woodwinds in the second row, brass in the third row, and the percussionists in the fourth row. Orchestral organization is based solely on dynamics. The softer-sounding and smaller instruments (violins,…

When thinking about marching band, most people picture a geeky, pimple faced little kid that barely knows what they are doing. But, what if I told you marching band is more than that? Marching band is more than the effort the performers put into making their performances perfect, more than just watching a bunch of people walk around the field for ten minutes, and more than the cool uniforms and props. Marching band is about the inspiration. Because marching band is so physically and mentally demanding, that must make it a sport instead of fine art. So, with all the things, why don’t people consider it a sport?…
