The Role Of Power In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

Power comes from the Latin word potere, which means “to be able”, but in Of Mice and Men power can mean a lot more. Power in a novella is when a character has physical strength, or is in control. Power was shown a great amount throughout the novella “Of Mice and Men”, although a few characters were powerless, many had, at least, some power. George had power over Lennie, Slim had more power than most, and Curley was powerful overall. The level of power and how it was abused influenced characters as well as the outcome of the story. George had a great amount of power over Lennie because he had a disability, so therefore George controlled some of his actions, as well as having power over what he did and did not do. Lennie had physical power because he was big and strong, but lacks mental power. Lennie has the advantage of physical power, but yet George is
High intellectual power is shown throughout the book many times, it can be shown through smart's, actions, and ideas. Crooks has a very lange collection of books, raising his intellectual power, Crooks is also able to get in Lennie’s head and keep forcing him to believe that George is leaving. Slim is another character with high intellectual power, he has advanced knowledge in subjects, and very high authority, Slim was wise beyond his years in my opinion. George has very little physical power, but very high intellectual power, especially over Lennie. He has control over Lennie and makes sure he makes the right decisions.
