The Role Of The Community In S. E. Hinton's The Outsiders
Paulo Coelho once said “If someone isn't what others want them to be, the others become angry. Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own.” This is a quote that is proven true throughout S.E. Hinton's acclaimed book ,The Outsiders. The Outsiders is a novel about two groups of young adults, named the Greasers and the Socs. It takes you through journeys of courage and denial between the groups, and presents how much their feud impacted largely on both groups. The story is told by the perspective of one of the Greasers Ponyboy. In the novel, The Outsiders, much of the contradiction and strife in the community is caused by the Socials.

The Socials were responsible for causing Bob and Johnny's death. They were responsible for putting Johnny in another life or death situation when they attacked Ponyboy and attempted to attack him after. “I had to. They were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you. And they had a blade... they were gonna beat me up--- "Like..."--- I swallowed--- "like they did before?" Johnny was quiet for a minute. "Yeah," he said, "like they did before.”This

If the Socials did not start all of the quarrels in this novel a lot of things would've been different. Having Bob and Johnny die made an impact on both groups humongously which also is a twist to hearing about all of their conflicts, yet the Socs still fight in the rumble after they lost one of their leaders. What would've happened if the Socs had changed their ways after Bob died...would Dally not of killed himself, would the Dally let Johnny and Ponyboy runway?. After reading this novel you will question what could’ve happened differently if even the smallest thing changed. While you will only see one perspective it is definitely the Socs who should be held responsible for starting

The Outsiders gives the reader hints and ideas from the story explaining how we should act and other moral issues. For example, a message the author describes is to stay young and innocent. The Greasers, specifically the younger Greasers, are taught to smoke and kill at a young age. This leads them to do bad things such as going to jail, participating in rumbles, and robbing stores. In other words, bad influence at a young age allows them to do illegal actions. By showing these actions from characters and the negative results, Hinton leads readers to the best idea of civility- trying to prevent the habit of performing crimes and being corrupted. Also, S.E. Hinton sends an important message to people who want to give up. She gives clues throughout the story about the importance of friendship and to not block out your emotions and problems. When Johnny dies, Ponyboy started to give up, emotionally and physically. He keeps on convincing himself that Johnny isn’t dead and also neglects his family, including his gang. S.E. Hinton teaches the readers that just because they’ve been…

In The Outsiders the Greasers have less money than the Socs, so they are poor. Johnny kills the Soc, and Johnny, and Ponyboy have to change their identity so that they don’t fit the descriptions. Also in this novel a member from each group changes one changing in a good way, and the other changing in a bad way. S.E Hinton meant to show that everyone is going through something no matter how good their life seems. Since Ponyboy is a Greaser, a Greaser usually gets jumped by a Socs. While Ponyboy tells about how Johnny got jumped, Ponyboy also gets jumped for the first time. “‘ I had never been jumped, but I had seen Johnny after four Socs got hold of him, and it wasn't pretty. Johnny was scared of his own shadow after that. Johnny was sixteen then.” Page 5. Also on the same page, "Need a haircut, greaser?" The medium-sized blond pulled a knife out of his back pocket and flipped the blade open….."Are you alright, Ponyboy?"” This shows how the Socs jumps onto a Greaser. However, after getting jumped, his brother, Darry helps him and carries him to help him out. Another example is when Ponyboy and Johnny just finished watching the movies and when the Socs came to fight against them. This quote shows how Johnny is loyal to Ponyboy and helping him out. “"You really killed him, huh, Johnny?" "Yeah." His voice quavered slightly. "I had to. They were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you. And they had a blade... they were gonna beat me up...."”…
