The Scalar Principle states “authority and responsibility should flow in a direct line vertically from the highest level of the organization to the lowest level” (Starling, p. 300). It can also be identified as the “chain of command”. In most work settings, utilizing the scalar principle is highly emphasized, especially in a military setting because it establishes an organized environment and different levels of authority within individuals. For example, requesting leave of absence can be approved by the first line supervisor because they are directly involved with daily operations.
