Red is the color which symbolizes wounds or death, and in this story the color of bird portends the death of the main character. This short story by James Hurst has many symbols, but the symbol of the bird is the most important one and the most vivid. When Doodle was born, he had a body which was read, and everybody thought that he was going to die. When the bird dies, it is compared with a vase of red flowers. As one can observe, the red color is also used in this example. Even when Doodle dies, his brother finds him under the red bush. When the brother weeps, he begins to understand that the red vision is familiar to him. These repetitive mentions of the red color give readers the idea that the end is inevitable.
Doodle’s brother wants to change Doodle, and it also contributes to Doodle’s tragic fate. He puts a lot of pressure on him, wants him to be strong and educated, but Doodle is not able to become such a person. Doodle was born an invalid, and nothing can change that.
