The Scarlett Letter is about a woman named Hester. Hester is living a normal life when out of no where she is accused of being with someone outside her marriage. Back in June 1642 it was illegal to be with someone outside of your marriage. Hester was also pregnant and refused to tell anyone who her unborn child father was.If you were caught committing adultery you had to showcase to everyone what kind of person you are. So since Hester was suspected of adultery the town made her wear a scarlet A on her dress so everyone knew what she did and so she would feel shameful about her actions. One of the visitors is a reverend and the other is a minister who bother try to get Hester to tell them who the childs father is but Hester refuses to tell them anything. Lastly she gets another visitor who is a physician. Once the physician walks in she realizes that the physician is her husband. He demanded to know whats been going on and he demands to know who the child’s father is but Hester still refuses to give up the name. Since Hester refuses to give up the name Roger tells her that she better not tell anyone that he is her husband or her will kill the man that fathered her child. She notices strange behavior in Pearl and even starts noticing her being obsessed with the scarlet A that her mother has to wear on her dress. Hester tries on numerous occasions to change Pearls behavior but she has no luck. Rumors start to spread around town about pearl,s behavior as well. Even the church startes noticing Pearl’s strange behavior and actually wants to take Pearl away from Hester. Hester starts to hear the gossip about them trying to take pearl away so she goes to see the governor and reverend to plead with him to keep her daughter. He agrees to let Hester keep Pearl in her care. The reverend starts getting sick and becomes friends with Hesters husband Roger. Roger suspected that the reverend and Pearl had a secret life together and that is why the reverend is so sick.
