The Scramble For African Imperialism

The scramble for Africa was the rapid takeover of African countries by Europeans during the imperialism and colonialism era. Imperialism is when a strong country expands their power by taking over a weak country using force and violence (M.Webster). Colonialism is when a country takes over another country exploiting it economically and turning it into a colony (M.Webster). Once the country is imperialized, the other country, then makes a colony and owns that territory. Africa was imperialized by European countries during the New Imperialism era, which occurred between the years 1881-1914 (Wikipedia). They stripped Africa and divided the land into many territories turning Africa into a divided nation. The scramble affected historical and modern day Africa and African America. Historical Africa was impacted the hardest due to the scramble. When the European countries colonized Africa and split the land they tore families apart. They divided the people and forced their customs such as Christianity on them. The Europeans took their natural resources such as diamonds and oil. The territories and land that were divided are causing problems between the African people. There are constant battles between the people on who owns what land. Before the Europeans came in and split the land they knew who owned what. Once the Europeans migrated out the people of Africa wanted their land back. They are currently at war with each other attempting to take their land back. Parts of the continent are also poor. They have a giant gap between the rich and poor, majority of the continent is poor because they have not tapped into what they need in order to thrive and become rich and powerful.
