The sea by James Reeves
The sea by James Reeves.

1) The two aspects being identified are the characteristics of the dog and the sea. James Reeves is personifying the sea as if it were a dog.

2) James Reeves is mentioning the vastness of the sea by calling it giant. By stating the sea as grey he means that it’s opaque and to give the image that the sea is strong and frightening.

3) Both the dog and the sea roll on the beach throughout the day. The dog runs and rolls along the sandy beach and the waves from the sea are the ones swashing through the sand and rolling in and out constantly. They both also gnaw the dog will nibble anything it encounters and the sea by « gnaw » means nibbles on the sand by taking it off the beaches. The Dog growls and the sea makes it’s « growl » by the swooshing of the waves and their movement.
The dog plays along the wet cliffs while the waves crash against the cliffs and erode them. Both the dog and the sea lay along beaches night and day. From time to time the sea calms such as in May or June as does a dog from the heat.

4) As the eats up and swallows the stones and shells and everything related the dog is on a hunt for bones. Therefore the equivalent of stones for the sea is the bones for the dog. This is one of the reasons that James Reeves write “bones” 4 times repetitively.

5) While the dog is “shaking his wet sides over the cliffs” the sea is crashing against the sides of the cliff roughly and eroding away the rock.

6) The poet is describing the clashing of the waves and its slow then speed up movements that never stop.

7) This “dog picture” tells us that the dog is calm therefore so is the sea.

8) The repetition of “s” sounds is a sibilant, which represents the swooshing movement of the sea. This gives us the image that the sea is calm and slowly waves appear and disappear along the sandy calm beaches.

She struggles against the ripping force of the ocean current. Her arms are quickly tiring from swimming against it. She relaxes, letting her muscles fall limp. Within seconds, she is pushed out to sea. The people on the beach are so small, little tiny ants against a white sand backdrop. The tall condo skyscrapers are now tiny Lego buildings. The kids hollering and music blasting on the beach is faded like a distant memory. She will die out here, she’s sure of it. Her daughter won’t have a mother’s hand to hold when learning to walk. Her husband will be left a widower, forever broken by the loss of his love. She closes her eyes and accepts her fate as she drifts further out to sea. She floats for a long while, the salinity in the water steadily…

The narrator shows this development by changing the way he describes the sea. Early in the story, the sea “seemed like a horse leaping over a high fence,” and the men thought that nature was intentionally against them. But later on in the story, the men realize that nature is indifferent. It “paces to and fro,” and is no longer a factor to the survival of the men. The men almost seem to think nature is beautiful by saying, “the shine of the light, lifting from the sea in the south, changed to full gold.” The sea does not change itself but the way the men view the sea changes. The gulls, clouds, and tides illustrate that nature does not behave any differently when men need it to survive. No matter the situation, the tide rises and the tide falls. Crane shows that nature is equally hurtful and helpful to man’s situations. For every tough break that the men face like the rough seas and the wind suddenly calming down, they catch an equal amount of breaks such as a favorable wind or calm night. The fact that the men almost seem to get assistance from nature proves that nature is not always hurtful. The correspondent’s final rescue is the best example in the story. The correspondent was saved by a freak wave, which may also be responsible for killing of the oiler, and he must accept the fact that even though nature put him into harm’s way it also saved his life in the end. But the…

The ocean acts as a symbol of a child’s best friend, encouraging the child to the fearless and chase adventure. However, the father views the ocean differently, as he sees the ocean being dangerous. As stated in the text “I have since become a salt-water man, but sometimes in summer there are days when the restlessness of the tides and the fearful cold of the sea water and the incessant wind which blows across the afternoon and into the evening make me wish for placidity of a lake in the woods” (pg 1). This quote shows that the father is fearful of the sea, and seeks the comfort of the lake because how the waves of the ocean represent no control. Summer symbolizes the father’s favorite time of the year, Summertime, oh summertime, pattern of the indelible, the fade proof lake, the woods unshatterable, the pasture with the sweet fern and the juniper forever and ever, summer without end; this was the background, and the life along the shore was the design, the cottages with their innocent and tranquil design...”(pg3). This shows the father using imagery to describe his childhood trips to the lake to bond with his father period. The positive descriptions of beauty of their annual trips show s the happy memories he associates with the season. He becomes lost in these memoires and is convinced that times does not exist. “That the…

I chose John Updike’s Dog’s Death because it grabbed my attention and invoked an emotional reaction to the dog’s untimely death. I dislike dogs and poems but somehow the author had me smelling, seeing, hearing and feeling what he was saying. The poem is in narrative form and the story flows from beginning through to the middle and to the end. The setting was the narrator’s home where the dog was a valuable family member. He used personification; “She must have been kicked….,” to portray the dog as a valuable family member. His use of personification gave the dog human like qualities. He also used the personification to stress the emotional impact that losing a loved one had on the family. He started with imagery using the narrative form and he continued using it throughout the piece to created visuals to set a tone of sadness, grief and empathy…

“Fish," he said, "I love you and respect you very much. But I will kill you dead before this day ends.” “Fish," he said softly, aloud, "I'll stay with you until I am dead.” He is talking to the fish in both quotes as if the fish could actually understand what he was telling it. "I am as clear as the stars that are my brothers. Still I must sleep. They sleep and the moon and the sun sleep and even the ocean sleeps sometimes on certain days when there is no current and a flat calm." The moon and the sun were given that characteristic of sleep, and that they are calm when there is nothing going on such as humans do. “Why did they make birds so delicate and fine as those sea swallows when the ocean can be so cruel? She is kind and very beautiful. But she can be so cruel.” This quote gives the sea a human characteristic which is cruelty that it can be kind to fisherman by providing them with fish, yet at the same time it can be deadly to them with the violent waves it makes. “Don’t be shy, fish. Eat them.” The fish is given a human trait which is shyness. The old man is speaking to the fish as if it could understand and respond to what he’s telling it to do, that creates a feeling of both of them; the old man and the fish can understand each other. “The moon runs away... Then he was sorry for the great fish that had nothing to eat and his determination to kill him never relaxed in his sorrow for him… There is no one worthy of eating him from the manner of his behavior and his great dignity. " The moon is given the trait of movement, and it makes it sound as if it was a living object. “The clouds over the land now rose like mountains and the coast was only a long green line with gray and blue hills behind it…” All of these excerpts from the book show many ways in how objects or animals can be given human characteristics, without making the words sound…

Santiago, the old man, dreamed about the lion and the beach three times through the book. The dream reminds of him during his trip to Africa. Lions are usually seen as brave and fierce creatures and live in desert. The beach is viewed as a place to rest and calm down. That is a really strange image. When combined the author stressed the important relationship of human meaning of love and hate or death and life.…
