The Second Coming And Things Fall Apart
“Things fall apart; the center cannot hold”. This quote is used by William Butler Yeats in his poem, “The Second Coming.” In the books Absolutely True Diary Of A Part Time Indian and Things Fall Apart, this quote is referred to many times and relates to both books. Umuofia and Junior’s lives both had times when things were “falling apart”. Junior has to learn to adapt to many changes in his life while the people of Umuofia have done the same. The people of Umuofia have to learn how to cope when things are falling apart. All three of the texts show what happens when “as things fall apart, the center cannot hold.”
There are several things that held people together in Things Fall Apart and Absolutely True Diary Of A Part Time Indian. In Umuofia,

In Umuofia when the Christian Missionaries came in everything slowly began to fall apart. People were changing their beliefs and breaking Igbo tradition. When things were perfectly normal, everything began to fall apart. “The arrival of the missionaries had caused a considerable stir in the village of Mbanta.” (Page 52 ebook). As the village of Umuofia falls apart, “The center cannot hold.” When Junior went to Rearden, (the white school) everyone on his reservation turned on him. His reservation is very friendly to each other and were a close community until he moves schools. His reservation feels betrayed and upset. Arnold does not feel like he fits in and he is split between two different worlds; the reservation and Rearden. Junior's best friend Rowdy was angry and mad that Arnold left him. “ I didn’t want to get him mad. When Rowdy got mad it took him days to get un-mad. But he was my best friend and I wanted him to know the truth. “I’m not trying to get you mad, I’m just telling the truth . I’m leaving the rez, man.” (Page 49) This quote shows how Rowdy is very mad that Arnold is leaving and going to Rearden. Arnold's friends and family slowly begin to start to fall

When Arnold decided that he wanted to go to Reardan he wanted his only and best friend, Rowdy to go with him. When he told Rowdy about going to Reardan he felt like Arnold was abandoning him. He got really upset and angry and made it clear they were no longer friends. “I stayed on the ground for a long time after Rowdy walked away...But I had to stand eventually, and when I did, I knew my best friend had become my worst enemy”(53). This shows that Rowdy resented Arnold so much for going to Reardan he didn’t want to be friends with Arnold anymore. One of the biggest differences between Junior and Rowdy is their attitudes towards school. Junior wanted to leave his school at the reservation and transfer to Rearden. Going to the school in his reservation upset Junior. He showed his frustration by saying, “my school and my tribe are so poor and sad that we have to study from the same dang books our parents studied from” (Alexie, 31). Juniors school was poor and they couldn't afford to buy new resources. Wellpinit was poor and Junior didnt got angry…

As mentioned prior, part one of the book highlights both the drastic prominence of religion in Ibo culture and its natural state before the occurrence of change. This portion of the book shows that the practices and morals of the Igbo people’s religion have a direct impact on the tribe's choices in rituals, ceremonies, and even punishments. One of the items used by the Ibo people, known as the "Oracle of the Hills and the Caves," is a prime example of religion's impact on the tribe. The article both guides them and determines whether or not their tribe is permitted to perform certain actions, such as declare war against another clan, "And there were indeed occasions when the Oracle had forbidden Umuofia to wage a war." Such an object helps to exude the themes of respect and sin, which are quite important in understanding the meaning of Things Fall Apart. If the tribe continues to follow the guidelines of their religion and take the Oracle’s advice, then it will be able to maintain respect; however, if it does not, then both its reputation and respect will be lost, as the tribe has become lost in sin.…

Things Fall Apart illustrates the beauty and fragile nature of the Igbo clan, and the tragic downfall of their entire culture. The title, Things Fall Apart, has a deep meaning that brings the unfortunate situation of Umuofia to light. The Second Coming, and Things Fall Apart, have striking similarities in their themes, and the ideas present in both of the pieces, making them seem as if they are written by the same person, or are somehow connected. In Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe chose the title of his book to illustrate the tragedy of losing a culture to the destruction of evil.…

He is very sentimental and sensitive. He is afraid of being by himself in a new world. Not having Rowdy in Reardon High School, makes it a little bit harder for Junior because people will make fun of him and could also hurt him. On page 54 Junior says, “I’m scared dad.” Dad replied, “You can always go back to the Rez School.” Junior does not want to go back to the Rez School because he could get hurt and he also won’t be able to get a good education. Junior already made the decision of going to a different school and he was not going to give it up just because he was scared. Junior has conquered some of his weakness. An example in which show us that Junior has overcome one of his fears is when Roger made a racist comment about Indians. He said, “Did you know that Indians are living proof that niggers fuck buffalo?” Junior punched Roger in the face and then challenged him to fight but instead Roger walked away from Junior. This is a big achievement for Junior because this time he didn’t have to depend on Rowdy to help him out. Little by little, Junior is defeating his…

Because of Rowdy’s defeatist attitude instead of accepting the invitation to go to a better school he cursed Arnold. Rowdy was raised by a drunken father that physically and mentally abused him fostering a defeatist attitude in Rowdy. Defeatism blurs one’s vision and covers one’s ears. A person loses the ability to see the situation in an objective way. Making things worse, it also makes it hard for one to listen to good advice. Even if the advice is sound, one won’t be able to appreciate it, much less act on it. As a result, one misses many chances to grow, reach goals, or turn things around. “When faced with defeatist thoughts, immediately ask yourself, So what if I fail. Tell yourself that failures do not deserve your attention.” (Article.vbml.net pg. 2) “Pay attention to your thoughts. You may not be able to control all if the many thoughts constantly running through your mind, but you can control which ones you choose to hold on to.” (Edmunds USA…

In Sherman Alexie’s novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, Arnold’s best friend Rowdy calls him a “retarded fag” for transferring at the start of their freshman year of high school. Due to his background as a child, Rowdy uses cruel language and hurtful gestures anytime Arnold and Rowdy came face to face. In the chapter Revenge is my Middle Name; Arnold compares Rowdy to a snake, stating he is one of the “toughest kids on the rez… his heart is strong and mean like a snake, too” (15). His heart has calcified due to the physical abuse his father has endured on him and his mother. Rowdy calls his bruises and cuts “war paint” because it makes him look fierce (16). Arnold was the only good thing on the reservation that Rowdy had to look forward too so when Arnold decided to leave, it unleashed a new kind of relationship between the boys, one not so friendly. One example would be when Rearden played Wellpoint in the first basketball game of the season, Rowdy knocked Arnold out and gave him a concussion. Another instance would be in the chapter, “Rowdy Gives Me Advice about Love” when Rowdy replies to Arnold’s message, “Hey asshole, I’m sick of Indian guys who treat white women like bowling trophies” (115). He uses offensive language but shows that he still cares for his best friend by simply responding. When Arnold finds Rowdy crying in the bushes at Mary’s funeral, his reaction was to punch Arnold to show how emotionally strong he was. In reality, Rowdy felt disposable and abandoned. Rowdy acted out because he didn’t want Arnold to know how much his leaving the reservation hurt him. All these destructive behaviors are evidence that he does in fact care for Arnold in a…

Second of all, overdoses because of prescription drugs can affect anyone, and it causes more death than vehicle crashes. People have been more focused on making cars safer so you can basically text and drive at the same time, rather than making drugs more safe. In the article The Cost of the Opioid Crisis it states that the number of people dying because of prescription opioid is larger than those who die in motor vehicle accidents. People are still trying to make cars safer even though the opioid epidemic is now exceeding the amount of deaths. “ In 2013, though, opioids killed 16,235 people; that's approximately half as many as died in traffic accidents that year, and about 2,000 more than were murdered” (Pain medications are killing a shocking…
