A Girl Finding Out her Mother’s Past Maternal Love. A mother’s love is so important to all of us, yes sometimes we get angry or fight with them but, we can’t bear to stay mad at them, for they are still our mother and just doing on what’s best for us. In The Secret Life of Bees, a fiction novel by Sue Monk Kidd, the determined protagonist, Lily Owens, finds out all about her mother’s past, the day she died when Lily was 4, no matter where or how long it takes her. Her interactions with minor characters like T. Ray, her father, Rosaleen, the Boatwright sisters, and other minor characters in the novel creates conflict that will move the plot towards the climax and, eventually to the resolution.
This is a story where the girl runs away from her home to get away from her abusive father to find out her mother’s past. The Secret Life of Bees, a fiction novel by Sue Monk Kidd, takes place in Mid-20th century in Tiburon, South Carolina. Lily Owens, the protagonist, is a 14 year old girl who lives in Sylvan with her abusive no mercy father, T. Ray, and also the antagonist of the story. The main conflict is when he told her that Lily’s mother left her, Lily now then run away from her home with Rosaleen and begins her quest in Tiburon on finding out her mother’s past and, the day she died, no matter what. The day when Lily found a box full of her mother’s memories with the Black Madonna’s picture in it and in the back of the picture says “Tiburon S.C.” on it, Lily’s determination rose up on finding out her mother’s past leading her through many complications: first when Lily and Rosaleen, their black maid and Lily’s stand-in-mother, are in town, Rosaleen insults the three deepest racist in it which led her and Lily to jail, luckily T. ray got Lily out but not Rosaleen. When Lily and T.Ray got home he got so angry at Lily and finally told her that her mother left her but Lily didn’t believe him which motivated her to run away and bust
