Teenage Motherhood Every year in America 3 in 10 girl teenagers will get pregnant before the age of 20. That’s nearly 750,000 newborn babies being brought into this world. The teenage couple should be safe and more careful before they know what they are getting themselves into. The popular show Teen Mom shows how difficult a teenage girls’ life would be like a child. The reason this show is on and many watch it, because it could happen to any teenage girl who is sexually active. Not only does it show you the difficulty of having a child, it also shows you the reality of it. I believe that the show Teen Mom teaches more about teen pregnancy than it depicts. The first point it gets across the lack of adequate finances for the family. Many teenage mothers haven’t completed their education or are settled on a career yet, and don’t have savings set aside for the birth of the child. “The children of teen mothers are more likely to depend on publicly provided health care than the children of older mothers. In fact, 84 percent of health care expenses for children (ages 0–1) of teen mothers aged 18–19 are provided through public programs. Three quarters of health care expenses for pre-school children of teen mothers 17 and younger are provided through public programs. This is compared to about half of the expenses for children born to mothers who were aged 20 or 21” (Sutton, 2009, p.268). People always get divorces but the chances of the teenage couple staying together throughout the years is not very likely. “Most adolescent mothers report an unmarried relationship with the father of the child before they became pregnant. The fathers of children born to adolescent mothers tend to be 2 to 4 years older than the mothers” (Leong, Altmaier, and Johnson, Walker, & Cosden, 2008, p.417). The two may have different opinions on how to handle the situation of caring for the child. On the show Teen Mom, the father of the child rarely sticks around. It is also very difficult for the child to grow up and see that his or her parents aren’t doing well together. The parents might not be together at all. The father not sticking around will set a bad example for the baby growing
