The short story, “The Scarlet Ibis”, by James Hurst, shows that obtaining excessive pride is extremely harmful and can leave someone so heartless, while love and affection can fill one’s heart with happiness. Pride is an important theme in the story, because pride is linked with the shame and embarrassment that the narrator has to deal over his little brother, Doodle, who has a disability of not being able to walk. The narrator,”Doodle’s brother”, was so ashamed to have a brother like Doodle, that he even decides to kill the baby by smothering him with a pillow (Hurst 1). This shows that the narrator has no affection, love, or sympathy for his own brother and even planned on killing him just for pride and significance. The narrator is very mean to Doodle throughout…

Also sometimes he didn’t say anything with his confidence. This led to persecution by Giles Corey having pride in not giving the court a name. Giles Corey is getting pressed and he is not giving up the name the court wants. So Giles Corey says “More weight” (miller207). This quote was important because he ends up dying from how much weight they put on him and they falsely accused Giles. Another example of pride would be when John Proctor tears his confession up. The history of wars and battles can be dated back almost to the beginning of time and has since been a prominent motif in stories from various cultures and religions. Centuries later, descriptions of fighting styles to warriors to weapons, has greatly evolved. Despite the constant evolution of the ways fighting is portrayed, one thing has remained consistent over the years: the reason for initiating war. When a man’s pride is wounded, the idea that he will stop at nothing to restore it, can be seen throughout literature in many different cultures. Through the malicious and extravagant battles exhibited in The Iliad, the idea that vengeance is sought once an individual's pride has been harmed and can only be resolved by combat, is developed.…

Many of the characters in The Things They Carried exemplify tremendous pride in their actions, causing them to do good or bad things that they would not have the courage to do otherwise. O’Brien’s personal experience shows that the fear of being shamed before one’s fellow soldiers is a powerful motivating factor in war. He does not want to fight in a war he believes is unjust, but he does not want to be thought of as a coward. This same attitude among numerous characters sets a consistent theme in the novel.…

I felt many things while reading this passage. I was shocked at times and other times I was surprised. Success isn’t required the first time around. “First-time failure, by contrast, is expected; it is the natural order of things.” (Caroll). Public embarrassment to feed your soul kind of surprises me because most people don’t want to embarrass themselves. “She risked failure and profound public embarrassment in order to feed her soul. (Caroll). Why wouldn’t you tell someone that failure is a good thing? Telling someone failure is good could actually help them. “I probably won’t tell her that failure is a good thing, because that’s not a lesson you can learn when you’re five.”…
