Relationship abuse is not an uncommon issue. Thousands of Americans are affected by this; many people do not recognize the signs of it at all. But once eyes are opened on the problem, it is clear to see all of the horrible signs of different types of abuse: physical, emotional, verbal, or sexual. Yet, today the prevalence of abuse in entertainment is surprisingly large. It can be in a simple movie or a book; nevertheless, society will turn a blind eye to the over-obvious signs of abuse in these relationships. My eyes were opened; unfortunately waking up to the knowledge meant that many relationships I used to like were just as bad. I want to point out the clear signs that we choose ignore in these famous books and movies we all adore such as Twilight, Edward stalks, manipulates, and isolates Bella throughout the series which are all signs of physical and emotional abuse. Now, society is lead to believe that he is doing this because he loves her and cares about her well-being, when in fact he is doing it because he “needs to control and overpower” (Abusive Behavior 15) Bella. All the main female characters have been written to “have low self-esteem...[and] often are unsure of their own needs” (Abusive Behavior 10) major signs of a victim in an abusive relationship. Because of how relevant this topic is in today’s society, I wish for all people, all age and gender, to help stop this disgusting attitude towards abuse. It is a hard concept for people to under, especially when we have lessons on Gatsby’s true love for Daisy in The Great Gatsby when in fact, he is only creepily obsessed with her and won’t let go of her. However, I believe with teaching correct ways to treat each other, and stopping romanticizing abuse; society can overcome this view.
