Spartacus was an important leader in Rome. He was born in 109 BC and died in 71 BC on a battlefield near Petelia Italy. His occupation was a Gladiator. He is best known for leading a slave uprising against Rome. Spartacus was of the the Thracian nationality. He joined the Roman army when he was young. When he tried to leave the army, he was caught and sold into slavery. He was then forced to be a gladiator. A gladiator was a man trained to fight wild animals and other gladiators in an arena. In 73 BC seventy gladiators with Spartacus as their leader, escaped the gladiator school. They fled to Mount Vesuvius near the city of Pompeii gathering slaves and weapons. Rome sent an army of 3,000 men led by Claudius Glaber. Spartacus surprised the…

In the book, Slave Rebellion in Brazil: The Muslim Uprising of 1835 in Bahia, authors Joao Jose Reis and Arthur Brakel discuss the Bahia slave rebellion in Brazil. In Bahia, slaves are the backbone of the economy. According to Reis and Brakel, “slaves made up the great bulk of the laboring class and were political, social, and economic subordinates of the planters”. After Brazil became an independent nation, Bahia faces an economic downturn that leads to declines in employment, as well as inflation. Due to these instabilities, there are small revolts that occurred from both the public and slaves. It was from these issues, that the 1835 rebellion will evolve. The rebels plan for the rebellion to take place on a Muslim holiday, known as Our Lady…
Slaves fought back for their rights. There were many ways for them to fight back they had a lot of reasons. One way was that they pretended they didn't know how to use the tools or pretended not to understand the instructions they were given. They will burn down building break tools to fight back and not do work. Another way they fought back was by rebellion, but it was not a very common way for slaves to fight back, but when they did they will ''only the Stono Rebellion and Nat Turner's Rebellion achieved any success; white Southerners managed to derail the other planned rebellions before any attack could take place'' (https://www.thoughtco.com/ways-slaves-showed-resistance-to-slavery-45401).…
What is slavery? According to Dictionary.com it is the process in which “a person who is the property of and wholly subject to another; a bondservant”. Slavery is very unheard of in this millennium era for as it first occurred in 1619 when the first African Americans were brought over to North American colony of Jamestown and ended in 1865 when the thirteenth amendment was ratified and abolished slavery. For many of the persons in this new generation not a lot of reflection is focused on slavery and its cruelty. It is up to the few who are given the opportunity to share the truth of the violence and exploitation of slavery and the harm it caused not only to the newly founded country but specifically the South. Slavery was a chain of unjustifiable…
Slaves were considered the property of their owners, so their bodies were at the disposal of their owners. Since slaves were one of the categories of people Roman males could engage with, many homosexual relationships were with slaves. It was a common practice for unmarried Roman men to keep an attractive young slave as their sexual companion. Young male slaves were sometimes sold for the sole purpose of intercourse, and their bodies were put on display at markets for prospective purchasers. Despite this, it was illegal to have sex with another man’s slave because the body of the slave belonged to the slave owner. Many pederastic relationships involved young slave boys who were often regarded as pets and were spoiled, but still considered…
According to Lingon, the slaves of Barbados have not revolted for three reasons. First reason being that the slaves do not have access to touch or handle any weapons. Secondly, the slaves are “held in such awe and slavery,” they are scared to come of as bold because they know they will get in trouble. Lastly, seeing and hearing the sound of men and gun shots terrify them, therefore, they are unable to stand up for themselves. 3.…
In the book, "An Empire for Slavery", Randolph B. Clark describes the way in which Texas slaves coped with life under oppressive circumstances. Some of the topics discussed in the book include how slaves approached daily chores and provided for their material and physical condition. Also, it is demonstrated how slaves tended to their psychological and spiritual well being and how they displayed their feelings towards this "Peculiar Institution."…

Enslaved African Americans resisted slavery in a variety of active and passive ways. "Day-to-day resistance" was the most common form of opposition to slavery. Breaking tools, feigning illness, staging slowdowns, and committing acts of sabotagewere all forms of resistance and expression of slaves' alienation from their masters. Running away was another form of resistance. Most slaves ran away relatively short distances and were not trying to permanently escape from slavery. I have chosen to talk about five different instances when slaves rebelled or revolted. The five revolts I chose to discuss throughout my paper are Denmark. Vesey s Slave Revolt of 1822, the New Orleans Louisiana Revolt of January 1811, the New York City Slave Rebellion…
Slavery was a major mercantile in ancient Rome. In terms of economic value, slaves can be consider as an important commodity for the Romans, as its demand were high enough. Thus, in every three Roman households have used slaves' labor. On other hand, there were two types of slave, the white-collar and blue-collar slave. The labor forces of those slaves was an integral to the overall economy of Rome as without them plantation farms left uncultivated and unproductive and major businesses will not flourish without those slaves, who work as accountant and managers, that ran them (Classic page website, n.d).…
The American Revolution produced a new outlook. Unfortunately, groups excluded from immediate equality were Native Americans, slaves and women. Women were loyal in their service to the Patriots but they didn't gain any type of legal or political rights. However, freedom, equality, and independence were very inspirational to women and these ideas would help them in the future to become independent.…
Although the slaves knew no major breakdown of the system could occur as a result of their individual acts and risked fatal consequences, they still resisted to get closer to their dream of freedom. One common way was escaping, which threatened “…the stability of the slave system…,” as slaves often ran to larger communities of free blacks in the South or the North (Foner 424). For example, Josiah Henson ran away, trusting the North Star to “…guide my feet in the way of hope” (Henson 76). His act of resistance was inspired by the hope of a free future, which also encouraged resistance on the plantation. Many resisted by retaliating against the violence of their slaveholders. For example, in one situation, after a master’s wife became angry at a slave girl, she sent for the slave-driver to whip her (Parker 153). However, “when he came, the girl refused to be whipped…he beat her so badly that she was nearly killed…” (Parker 154). In this instance, although the slave-driver hurt the girl, there was resistance in her first refusing to be beaten. Another example from the narrative of Solomon Northup describes a situation when a slave girl denied the charges of misbehavior, causing her whipping by Northup (Northup 255). Northup only did so until “throwing down the whip, I declared I could punish her no more” (Northup 257). As a result, the girl was whipped more harshly. Both…
Each expression of resistance by enslaved individuals or groups counted as acts of rebellion against the system of slavery. Enslaved African Americans resisted slavery in a variety of active and passive ways by breaking tools, feigning illness, staging slowdowns, and committing acts of arson and sabotage. All were forms of resistance and expression of slaves by being distance from their masters. Running away was another form of resistance. (Chapter 9, Page 437)" Some enslaved African Americans tried to run away to the free states in the North. A few succeeded. Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, two African American leaders who were born into slavery, gained their freedom when they fled to the North." As you can tell some slaves did succeed when they tried to escape their master, but some didn't succeed as well as the others. Slaves codes were state laws established to determine the status of slaves and the rights of their owners. Slave codes placed harsh restrictions on slaves' already limited freedoms, often to prevent rebellion or escape. It would also give slave owners absolute power over their…
Thinking back on the time when people were treated as property seems like such a distant time and it’s crazy to think that it wasn’t as far back as you may think or it may appear. The states that were mostly famous for slavery were the southern states since they’re decision to keep slavery alive was essentially what would tear the country apart and start a civil war between the North and the South. I can’t imagine being told to wake up at sunrise work all day until dark then get back up the next day with no pay, it should seem crazy to anyone living in our day in age. But back then the African American women, men, and children had no choice but to listen to their masters since they paid good money to have them. I also can’t imagine knowing that that type of lifestyle wouldn’t get any better because of how strongly the South felt about not abolishing slavery. For that reason and because of the fact that there was such strict laws about runaway slaves, I wouldn’t know what I would do with myself. It takes a strong person to forget about all the bad and think about the future and how they’re going to change the situation that they are in and that type of personality is expressed in the select few of many slaves who told their story. There was Fredrick Douglass Harriet Jacobs, Sarah Gudger, William Moore, James Cope, Martin Jackson, Rosa Starke, and Katie Darling. Unfortunately there isn’t enough time or paper for me to talk about all of the slaves and their stories so those are the ones that I’m going to be focusing on.…
