Sports are very popular in our society and its influence is everywhere, it affects the way we talk and act. Sports are one of the few things that are universal throughout all countries and cultures. Major sporting events such as the Olympics or World Series net hundreds of millions of views when they are showed. Newspapers and radio often have segments dedicated solely to sports. It is safe to say that sports play an important role in our everyday lives. From the three sociological perspectives, sports are both beneficial and harmful to society.
According to a functionalist perspective, sports contribute to society by performing multiple major functions. One of the functions sports serve is that it brings people together and acts as a social lubricant for acquaintances. Every year millions of family and friends gather together to watch the Super Bowl, by doing so it brings them closer together. Sporting events are also great places to go with friends if they share the same interests. Another function sports serve is that it helps to develop teamwork and companionship. In sports Teamwork and chemistry is everything, it can bring players and coaches closer together. People who Participate in sports are more compassionate and work better in a group.
According to the conflict perspective, sports are actually harmful to society in ways; it separates the powerful and those of the powerless. One of the ways sports can separate people is the how much the seats costs. Front row seats are the most expensive because they give the viewers the best view. However this creates a divide between the rich and the poor, the rich will always get the front row seats and the poor will always be in the back. Also in sports, the better position gets the most pay; in Football the quarterback is the most important position so the quarterback gets paid the most. .
