The Spartacus War By, Barry Strauss

Sparta is a gladiator and slave best known for leading the slave rebellion in Italy against the Rome in 73-71 B.C. Ancient writers seem to have admired Sparta's military skills, but they doubted the slaves' success. They were happy when the rebellion was extinguished and social order was once again restored. Spartacus now seems to be an inspiration to many. People seem to enjoy the idea of an underdog rising to power to overthrow a much more powerful force. It is compelling and tragic that an armed rebellion of slaves could have achieved much against its ferocious Roman Republic.
Barry Strauss writes about The Spartacus War, and the story of the life of Spartacus. The legend of Spartacus should suet the interest of any reader, especially historians. For those who want a romantic journey, or a crusade about ethnic conflict, this is for you. The Spartacus War tells of the history Spartacus, one of the most popular figures from ancient history. It should appeal to those who want to understand rebellion of the gladiator slaves. The book seems to have a lot of historic situations, ranging from the enslavement of Spartacus to his death by Cassius.

Spartacus is a symbol of power; but what was the reality? Barry Strauss is a historian at Cornell University. Being so Spartacus himself left no autobiography, Barry Strauss had to dig into historic records from ancient Greek, Rome and Italy to help uncover the mystery of Spartacus. Strauss had to go by the writing of ancient aristocrats. The problem is they seem to be biased towards Spartacus. Most of them focused on the threat that

The Spartan Phalanx is a powerful painting created by John Becker depicting the 2011 Michigan State football players as warriors and as Spartans. In its description, John Becker explains that he wanted to create a picture showing the Michigan State football players as a phalanx in Greek marching formation. Long ago, the Greeks used that attack formation to strike fear into their opponents and to show off their organization and stature. I think that Becker was able to create that image by contrasting the vibrant green to the bland white of their pants which in effect, showed off the players’ extensively built bodies and contributed to their formidability. Not only do the colors add to this menacing effect that Becker creates, but the Greek formation…

It has been said that Sparta had two separate histories, its own and that of its image abroad...Considering how much was written about Sparta in antiquity, it is remarkable how confused, contradictory and incomplete the picture is. Partly this is because the mirage is constantly cutting across the reality, distorting it and often concealing it altogether; and partly because the Spartans themselves were so completely silent. With respect to our knowledge of the helots in ancient Sparta, how accurate do you believe this statement to be? Why Did Rome Fear Spartacus? It is estimated that the number of slaves in Roman Italy, at its peak, was about one and a half million which was about 25% of the total population. However the Fist and Second Servile Wars did not particularly concern those living in Rome. Sicily was quite a distance away - too far to worry the Romans. Third Servile War (Gladiator War or the War of Spartacus) was different. This slave uprising threatened the very heart of Rome. In the period that this famous slave lived it is estimated that about 1 million people lived in the city of Rome and that of these about 400,000 were slaves - it is therefore no wonder that the name of Spartacus struck terror into the hearts of Romans.…

There are thoughts that have not been confirmed to this very day but one thing is for sure, Spartacus was able to share a vision with the slaves during the ancient times. There are arguments when it comes to the origins of him. Ancient historians believed that he was Thracian. A lot of authors have closed him in on so many origins that it became hard to keep track of them. Although, he is known to the world as a Thracian who later received training from the Roman army and was then sold to slavery.…

Among the most renowned literary works are those of the ancient Greeks. Literary works by the ancient Greeks include historical documentation, along with tragedies based on conflicts. According to the historian Thucydides, the greatest conflict was the Peloponnesian war between the Athenians and Spartans, along with each of their allies. In the opinion of Thucydides, the Peloponnesian war was due to the growth of Athens and the fear, the growth caused in the Spartans and their allies (Thucydides, Book I, chapter I). Accounts of events by Thucydides, for Francis Cornford, are not merely historic, but rather works of art. The History of the Peloponnesian War according to Thucydides is artistic through carefully crafted speeches and captivating…

Just a short generation before Leuctra, in 404 B.C., the Spartans had decisively beaten Athens, long their most dangerous enemy. In so doing Sparta had seized the hegemony of the Greek world. Leuctra must have seemed to many observers of the contemporary scene like rain from a clear blue sky. Yet, in hindsight, when we look more closely at the history of Sparta as a military society, the collapse at Leuctra starts to make sense. By the time they met the Thebans there, Sparta had long been in serious trouble; it was only a matter of time before someone found a way to exploit Sparta's profound inner weaknesses. The story of Sparta's decline and fall is an object lesson in the intimate relationship between social organization and military power.…

The strength of a state depends on the amount of glory within. Every man needs to be courageous in order for the whole to thrive. If an army is successful, it’s because each warrior had courage. In Sparta, if everyone didn’t excel at the same level, there wouldn’t be excellence as a whole. The amount of courage that a hoplite exhibited also showed how strong the state was. The state was above the self.…
