The way we view leaders and their roles in top down organizations are slowly changing, giving catalysts such as Non-Commissioned officers more of an effect on the Marines they lead. From 2003 to 2004, I was assigned to the Third Marines Field Service Support Group (3d FSSG) Medical Battalion in Okinawa, Japan as the company commander for the Headquarter and Support (H&S) Company. Medical battalions are staffed by Navy medical personnel, which support Marines in war zones. The H&S company structure included a company commander, executive officer, division officers and enlisted staff. A lot of people are not familiar with the military terms so I like to use the analogy that a company commander (military officer) is comparable to the Chief Executive Officer of the organization, the executive officer (military officer) is comparable to Chief Operating Officer; the division officers (senior enlisted members) are comparable to department heads, and junior enlisted are the staff.…

The overall objective of the book is to teach new, and old, leaders to become better leaders. While anyone can benefit from reading this book, the intended audience is leaders in any organization. One statistic that should be alarming to all leaders of businesses was that 65 percent of people leave their companies because of the managers (Abrashoff, 2002). How do leaders change that statistic? Abrashoff believes that running a ship is very similar to running any business; it takes motivating a crew to perform at the best of their abilities to achieve optimal efficiency and completion of tasks. He successfully takes his experiences from leading a Naval crew and teaches the audience how to apply it to their organizations. Along with highlighting every winning moment he and his crew experienced on the USS Benfold, Captain Abrashoff also shows failing moments the team had to endure. Those examples show the audience that in order to succeed, there has to be some trials along the way.…

AbstractThe Army uses all four functions of management through a Chain of Command. All leaders throughout the military use at least one function, but multiple leaders working together covers all functions. Always someone is planning, organizing, leading, or controlling. The reason the United States Military is so effective is because leadership and management always try to stay a step ahead. The rank structure provides a guideline to how much a soldier manages. More rank brings more responsibility, more respect, and more use of each function. Though not all functions are needed to be a manager, a good manager does need all four. The Chain of Command is the best example to show leadership, management, and the four functions - plan, organize,…

From the beginning of my Army career, due to the nature of my military occupational specialty, I have operated within the philosophy of “Mission Command.” As a young Soldier, I was expected to take the initiative to find stories about my unit that supported the command messages of my unit. At the time, I did not realize that I was exercising disciplined initiative and operating within the commander’s intent. Now, as I complete the Sergeants Major Academy, I have a thorough understanding of how public affairs is linked to mission command as a warfighting function. The purpose of this paper is to describe how public affairs is vitally linked to the mission command warfighting function and how applying the mission command principles will make me a more effective staff non-commissioned officer and leader.…

Marine Noncommissioned Officers (NCOs) have always been a crucial part in fighting America’s war. They distinguished themselves by taking on the responsibility to train their inexperienced Marines, and for accepting the challenge of command when platoon commanders were casualties. In Never to Dream of Spiders by Audre Lorde, the speaker attempts to move on from the loss of their significant other. In the first line, they say, “Time collapses between the lips of strangers.” (Lorde) They spend a great deal of time with strangers because they aim to erase the pain of their loved one’s death from their mind. A frequent method for moving on from someone is to cling on to any relationship possible. The narrator occupies themselves with anyone they can find, as it is easier than dwelling on their agonizing heartbreak. They clearly strive to heal from their anguish by seeking comfort from strangers in their new relationships. In stanza four, the narrator wistfully reminisces of “The smell of your neck in August.” (Lorde). The…

Leading Marines is the greatest resource that I have come across so far for guidance and motivation in becoming a leader of Marines. In one neat sentence located in the forward, we are given everything that sums up what is expected of future leaders of Marines: "Our actions as Marines every day must embody the legacy of those who went before us." Marines have a great expectation to live up to, and as commissioned officers we must absolutely carry on the tradition of excellent leadership that has come before us. This leadership comes in many forms under many different conditions. As there are no two people who are exactly alike, there is no single way to lead. Leadership is learned not born; one must utilize personal traits and experiences to find his way of leading. I draw some of my leadership style and experience from leading a football team, O.C.S., and principles I have learned from my parents, while others may draw on school, physical challenges, or any other of their personal experiences. This doctrine is meant to help the leader understand the excellence that they are inheriting, and to give guidance on developing one's own leadership style.…

It is my opinion that military leadership, unlike a lot of “leadership” positions in the civilian sector, actually develops one into a leader rather than a manager. Managers are often situated in the back of the action, while military leaders are encouraged to lead from the front. Mangers focus on things while leaders are focused on people. Managers are trained to organize individuals to do things right. Leaders are trained to inspire individuals to do the right thing; to motivate and influence.…
