The Starry Night
The Starry Night is an oil on canvas painting by the Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. It is regarded as among his finest works, and is one of the most recognized paintings in the history of Western culture. His brother Theo, a gifted connoisseur of contemporary art, was overall unimpressed with the work, telling Vincent, “I clearly sense what preoccupies you in the new canvases like the village in the moonlight… but I feel that the search for style takes away the real sentiment of things”. Although Theo Van Gogh felt that the painting ultimately pushed style too far the work has become iconic image in modern painting nonetheless.

The night sky depicted by Van Gogh in the Starry Night painting is full of brightly colored stars, twisting clouds, and a bright crescent moon. Starry Night is arguably one of Van Gogh's best paintings because of the excellent use of the elements of art, which is hard to achieve in one piece of artwork. This work almost has a dot-to-dot effect on the viewer's eyes because of the swirling motions moving in a circle through the middle of the painting but he uses the large tree and bright moon on different sides of the paper to give the painting unity.…

The inner conflict of each artist is represented in both works. The two works were painted more than a century apart but the similarities are remarkable. Neither landscape is ordinary. Both evoke a lot of emotion and many elements of the composition are similar. The sky is dark and almost violent looking. A storm is brewing on both canvases. Another similarity is that the church is the most visible element of the architecture in both works. The calmness of both cities contrasts with what is happening beyond the boundaries of the respective cities. However, there are some differences as well. Nature is not as prevalent in The Starry Night. The works are painted in different perspectives. View of Toledo is painted on a diagonal and while the mountains in the background of The Starry Night are slightly diagonal, View of Toledo appears much more three dimensional. The Starry Night is more stylized than View of Toledo. If a storm of this magnitude were to occur, the sky would be more similar to El Greco’s. Van Gogh’s is somehow more calm and welcoming than El Greco’s. The architecture also plays a role in setting the mood. In View of Toledo, the sharp lines combined with the atmosphere make the city appear harsh and unwelcoming while the town van Gogh painted is more calm. The way that Toledo is constructed on a hill while the one in The Starry Night is flat exemplifies…

A rising third-grade student named Ayden Pollard was chosen to participate in this assignment. The second-grade reading passage, entitled “The Night Sky,” was selected for Ayden to read. He appeared interested in the reading topic and read the passage quickly and fluently. Upon scoring this reading passage, Ayden used one mispronunciation, five substitutions, three insertions, and eleven omissions. According to Tompkins (2014), “only words that students mispronounce or substitute can be analyzed; repetitions and omissions are not calculated” (p. 85). Thus, omitted words were not included in the student’s reading level score. However, the high omission total is the focus of a key teaching point that should be addressed to increase overall reading…

Both Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost use elements such as point of view, imagery, and structure to portray the significance of dark and night in their poems. Although the poems differ in many ways they share a common theme of loneliness. They also use darkness as a symbol of their feelings. In the two poems “We Grow Accustomed to the Night” and “Acquainted with the Night” the authors use figurative language, sentence fluency and rhythms, and their word choice to reflect their similar views on the darkness of night symbolizing life experiences everyone has to face throughout life.…

The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh is consistent of his typical artwork. He uses the lines free and loose making it an expression of his contour lines. The spacing between the stars and the curving contours making it a dot to dot effect. Van Gogh’s, The Starry Night” portrays his personal emotion. He writes to his brother about his painting almost as if he would be confused himself about the painting. The village is dark but at the same time it is peaceful compared to the dramatic sky life. In Sol Le Witts, Wall Drawing it uses an ordered form and symmetrical form called classical lines. The line Sol Le Witts uses is considered a connection between two separate points. Although his work is displayed throughout various art museums, the actual work is not his own. Le Witts has the ideas and then gives the workers instructions on what he wants done. This reflects his personality in the way that his art work is controlled. The line form he uses is symmetrical. Sol Le Witt is unlike Van Gogh’s when it comes to his personality. In which Le Witt’s personality is logical and Van Gogh’s is emotional and chaotic. Both artists’ have clearly shown their personality in their art work through their different line forms and expressions.…
