A Character Analysis of Mrs. Mallard in “The Story of an Hour” “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin is a short story which tells a feeble woman’s brief encounter with independence, and Mrs. Mallard has to face sentiments of sadness at her husband’s death. As with plentiful prosperous short stories, however, the story does not end calmly at this point. Mrs. Mallard tragically passes away because of a heart attack while her husband abruptly comes back home. At this moment, we can touch Mrs. Mallard’s feeling over her husband’s incidental death, and astonish when she eventually find her freedom of life. Mallard’s actions are wise although her choice is unjust. As we can see she cries with abandon in her sister’s arm for only a while when her husband died, and then she seats back in the secrecy of her room to odor the moment. Commonly, most of women want to have someone by their side to comfort them in the bad situation. However, Mrs. Mallard doesn’t permit anyone to care or follow her. She realizes that she needs freedom, so she keeps her delight in secrecy. On reading of Mrs. Mallard’s apparently improper reaction to the tragedy including her husband. We will rapidly assume that she is selfish and cold, but she is just overprotection by her husband; it leads into dependence. Thus, she goes from being obedient wife to a feeling of freedom with the death of her husband. The new leaves on the trees sway in the light wind; the fresh breath of spring rain, the notes of a distant song, and the white clouds on the blue sky are all that she desires. She wants to touch, taste and feel the world outside the house. Therefore, Mrs. Mallard keeps whispering that she needs to be free for three times. We can imagine that she looks like a bird that is trapped in the cage for a long time with no freedom. That is a reason why everybody concerns about her and tries the best to defend her. However, they all never know what exactly she feels and wants. They just care and make sure that she does not do foolish thing to hurt herself. Mrs. Mallard is a round character. First, she is an obedient housewife, and then she turns to love herself after knowing the bad news that her husband dies. She lives in a fail marriage.
