Love is a powerful thing, but can be quickly damaged when those who love, abandon their loved ones. Author Sarah Dessen portrays many themes and subjects in her works, most of which include love, friendship, romance, and abandonment. One of Dessen’s works is Lock and Key, where Dessen’s story telling method fits the feel of the story, allowing it to move forward as Ruby lives day by day but still clings to her past. It’s a thought provoking and intelligent story about all kinds of relationships and love. Another novel by Dessen is Along for the Ride which is also about new relationships, romance, and getting through the past. It feels as if Auden is sharing confidence as she discovers that people are not easy to figure out and can change. She is quite the original character. Author Sarah Dessen deals with the theme of abandonment and romance in the novels Lock and Key, and Along for the Ride…

One wouldn’t argue that the biggest theme throughout Sparks’ book would simply be love. He is always talking about how you can’t escape your true love, or how love makes you do things for someone that you wouldn’t normally do for anyone else. Also that love brings out the true person you are. One quote in particular I thought applied to this theme was on page 175 of The Choice and it says “…both aware that they were sitting across from a person who just might change the course of their lives forever if they weren’t careful.” By saying that Sparks was emphasizing that your true love can’t be ignored. The one person you are meant to be with is there, and somehow they will find you, and you will be together. Destiny will take its path for whatever it has in store for you. After the initial finding of the love there is the remaining power that the love has to offer. People will go in and out of love and have complications but that’s what makes the game interesting, and in the long run better for the couple. For example, there is a quote from a letter that Wilson writes to his wife Jane in The Wedding on…

Spark’s is a talented writer, there is no doubt about that. He uses great descriptive writing to really help paint what he envisions while writing for the reader to see it just as he does. For example, the way he describes all characters, and the scenery around them. The story’s main character is a girl named Katie. The story starts off with Katie coming to a small town in North Carolina called Southport. There she has a little, old abandoned cottage. She is recluse and starts working at a restaurant named Ivan’s. She meets another main character named Alex and his two kids Josh and Kristin at the local grocery store that Alex owns. Alex and Katie form a friendship that eventually leads to a romantic relationship (what a big shocker there). Jo, a semi main character but mostly a minor character and is Katie’s only friend and neighbor. Sparks described Katie as having brown hair and being frail, thin to the bone. He kept up the mystery of her past from the beginning with her moving to a small town clearly looking to get away from her past. She has little to no money, clearly demonstrated when she would go to the grocery store and try to find the cheapest food items as possible. Sparks throws in a lot of allusion and flashbacks within chapters 17 to 21. Katie reveals to Jo that she was married to a detective named Kevin. She told Jo that Kevin became and alcoholic and would abuse her. She left hoping Kevin would never find her ever again. Within chapters 17 to 21,…
