Assata Shakur Paper

Assata Shakur is a very strong and determined individual that refused to give up her beliefs and ideas to receive her freedom. When she was incarcerated, treated like an animal, beaten to a bloody pulp and lost all basic human rights, she only grew more stronger and determined. Shakur was a political prisoner and suffered because of her Black Panther & Black Liberation Army affiliation. She spent six years in prison for crimes that she was not proven to have done or had any connection to. Most people would have given up and “sold out” to get their freedom back, she didn’t because she simply took it back! Shakur’s life changed dramatically on the night of May 2, 1973 on the New Jersey Turnpike when Zayd Malik Shakur, Sundiata Acoli and her car was stopped because “of a taillight.” After an altercation between Zayd Shakur and Trooper Harper, shots were fired which left Trooper Foerster and Zayd Shakur dead, Assata Shakur and Trooper Harper wounded. Shakur’s autobiography does a great job detailing the event. Shakur described the experience saying “Zayd was dead. My mind knew that Zayd was dead. The air was like cold glass. Huge bubbles rose and burst. Each one felt like an explosion in my chest. My mouth tasted like blood and dirt. The car spun around me and something like sleep overtook me. In the background I could hear what sounded like gunfire. But I was fading and dreaming.” (Assata 3) She was beaten very badly during the ordeal. The officer’s were very brutal towards her because they knew she was involved in the Black Panther Party and wanted information out of her. “Where did they go?...Bitch you’d better open your goddamn mouth or I’ll blow your goddamn head off!” (Assata 3) was how these officers talked to her. She doesn’t say a word. This is another example of her showing her resilience in an adverse time. She was in tremendous amount of pain. Shakur said “I felt myself

She dared to challenge the entire system of justice. While she may have been thought of as stiff, the fact that she fought for so many people for nearly her entire life greatly makes up for any small personality quirks she may have had. She seems to be lacking the recognition she deserves, she should be more well-known for her efforts than she is today.…

Terri, as a black male I felt so uncomfortable in my gut reading how black men have oppressed black females. Some of the reading was so difficult emotionally to read I felt a little sick to my stomach. The reading describing what happened on slave ships to children angered me to point of wanting to ask God why was this necessary. I began to wish I could go back in time and "wipe out" every slave owner and crew prior to picking up the first slave.…

Most people believed that after emancipation, life became better for the blacks but their life became hell because there was racism, the freed slaves were beaten, lynched and had no place to run to for safety. I found out that the whites got in the way of reconstruction because of the violence they keep displaying. In the video, “Without Sanctuary”, reveals how the whites treats the blacks just because of their dark skin. I saw a lot of horrible things the black slaves experienced and I wonder how human beings can be so mean and yet they talk of problems experienced during reconstruction, they blame it on the blacks.…

The life of Malcolm Little, and the hardships he was born into and had to deal with is the purpose of “The Autobiography of Malcolm X”. The text is very beautiful and powerful due to the way the author structures each scenario to the point where the reader becomes greatly involved. Throughout the story, the author allows the reader to understand everything by describing every event and confrontation vividly. (Alex Haley, Page. 1) “When my mother was pregnant with me, she told me later, a party of hooded Ku Klux Klan riders galloped up to our home in Omaha, Nebraska, one night”, this statement he recalls from what happened before he was even born shows how Malcolm’s intention in this story is to not leave any detail out.…

Formed as an outlet to their beliefs and the beliefs of others, Pussy Riot protested in scandalous matters using tactics such as provocative language and performing in certain places, like the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, where it would be their last performance. Although Pussy Riot broke the law to protest, they should not have been punished as harshly as they did for voicing their opinion against Russia’s government as there were people who had protested before and did not have to serve as much time as them. They were put in strict and intolerable conditions while the unfair trial occurred which later resulted in a long jail sentence for their protest against Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin.…

I found my self getting more and more interested and curious as I kept reading about her. She is such a great role model and the amount of strength she had was incredible. This is one of my favorite papers because I was actually interested in writing about my historical figure. I never realized what an important asset she was up until now. I think things now would be different if it wasn't for her. She showed strength and self-drive and never let the law or anyone get in the way of what was right and humane. I remember reading about this story. Rachel Dolezal's story did rub some people the wrong way. She received a lot of hate for it. I think that is the reason why she resigned. In my opinion, no one should never have to lie or hide who they truly are. No one can choose their own race. It is what you were born into. If you are white, you're white. If you are black, you're black. People should just accept that. You just can't up and change your race. When I saw a video of Rachel , you kept stating that she was black and it seems to me as if she is delusional because she really believe it. It wouldn't be acceptable if she received a scholar based on "being African American" because she isn't.With transgender-ism, they have a chance to change their…

The late Tupac Shakur is arguably one of the most well-known hip-hop/rap artists of all time. He is known for many of his hit songs like “California Love” and “How Do U Want It”. Some would say that his music established the foundation for hip-hop and rap today, especially in the west coast. As far as the genre of hip-hop and rap, there seems to have been a major shift from Tupac’s era to today’s day and age. The art form of hip-hop has been transformed from a genre primarily used to tell some sort of a story to the constant degradation of women. Excluding some rappers who have sought to preserve the story-telling aspect of hip-hop,…
