Abstract: Euphemism is one kind of figures of speech and it refers to the substitution of mild or vague or roundabout expression for harsh or direct one. As an indispensable and natural part of language, euphemism has been arousing wide interest. This paper will probe in the relationships between language, culture, taboo and euphemism. Moreover, this paper will compare English euphemism and Chinese euphemism from perspectives of formation, use range and culture. What happens to people when the seemingly simplest parts of life become a question of survival? In Steven Galloway’s “The Cellist of Sarajevo” people are forced to make decisions that will decipher whether or not they will remain alive and whether or not they will remain altruistic. Often, when people are forced into conditions like the ones outlined in Galloway’s novel, they may have to choose to focus on simply enduring to the end, even if doing what it takes to survive outweighs remaining genuine to their morals and to their humanity.…

In the essay “The World of Doublespeak,” William Lutz reveals the facts and dangers of doublespeak language which is used in all over the world. He begins with several examples of doublespeak and then, explains how to spot doublespeak. Lutz describes that doublespeak is "language that conceals or prevents thought; rather than extending thought, doublespeak limits it” (419).Doublespeak is language deliberately constructed to cover its actual meaning and it makes the bad seem good and the negative appear positive. Moreover, it is hard to spot and identify at the first glance; and not easy to recognize all the times. In the essay, Lutz describes the four categories of doublespeak that are euphemism, jargon, gobbledygook, and inflated.…

In the previous chapter I presented the default cases of metonymy and how cognitive and communicative principles govern the selection of a preferred metonymic vehicle. These principles enable us to understand why we choose certain entities to access a target and why some vehicle-to-target routes have been conventionalized in the language. However, it sometimes occurs that cognitive and communicative principles are overridden because of the speaker’s expressive needs or a particular social situation. The violation of the principles in question may result in the use of metonymy – based euphemisms which I will try to explore in the following discussion.…
