I chose to put a news paper article in my memory box due it being a good representation of Tom Robison’s Case, which was the reason for Scouts early coming of age. To begin, Since Atticus was defending a black man in this case, Scout had to put up with being constantly teased. This is seen when Francis yells “Nigger-lover!”(Lee, pg.83). Scout had to put up with this constant name calling in the town and was forced to learn to turn the other cheek. Further more, due to scout witnessing Atticus fight his case she was exposed to hearing very mature situations that a young girl shouldn’t be exposed too. This is said to be true when Calpurnia states “Calpurnia march us home..Skin every one of alive, the very idea, you children listenin ‘ to all that! Jem, don’t you know better’n to take your little sister to that trial?”(Lee,pg.207). This shows that Scout shouldn’t have been witnessing all the horrible things that were said in the trial. Lastly, Atticus taught scout by defending a black man that you should never judge a person by the colour of their skin. Atticus also teaches her this when he states,” You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view . . . until you climb into his skin and walk around in it. (Lee, pg.30). In conclusion, this newspaper was significant to scouts character because this trial was one of the main events in scout’s life to help her come of age.
I chose to put a boxing glove in my memory box to represents Scouts strength throughout the novel. Firstly, Scout has always been a very brave character; she shows this quality when Calpurnia asks “How’d you and mister Jem like to come to church with me tomorrow?”(Lee.pg.117). Even though scout was white and was well aware that she was not wanted in the church, she still went with Calpurnia to her all black church. Secondly, Scout shows strength by speaking up for her father by walking into an angry group of men to
