It is a Young adult fiction novel set in a Fantasy universe of Rick Riordan's creation featuring characters from his other novels but this time it incorporates Norse mythology. The novel also features a deaf and mute Alf, and the difficulties and discrimination he faced in his adolescence especially from his own parents. Blitz, a Svartalf, is another outsider among his species due to his inability to utilize skills that are common in that society. Nevertheless, he strives to achieve his dreams despite the backlash and disappointment he may face from those around him. The last two characters that round out the main cast is Magnus Chase, the main character, and jack his talking sword. Magnus as previously mentioned is an orphan who is killed and enters Valhalla, nurse's warrior heaven, after spending 3 years living on the street by himself. The author wrote his character in a fashion where you are able to better understand the mindset and the choices of the characters. Rick Riordan characterization of Jack, the sword, was surprisingly good. his personification of the weapon allowed the reader to sometimes even forget that Jack is an object instead of a living
