The story The Color Purple is about a fourteen-year-old girl name Celie who was raped repeatedly by a man whom she was lead to believe as her father majority of her life later only to find out later after her mother’s death he was not. At the time she believed that her father was her father so finding out that her father, Alphonso was not her father made her relieved being that she had gave birth to two children whom she believed was her brother and sister. Celie experienced rape, incest, sex and forced labor. She was handed off to a man whom she did not love by her father. The phrase Shug stated “I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it” says just that. At the beginning of the movie the scene opened with Nettie and Celie in the field of purple flowers. Celie didn’t notice the color purple in the field like any other person would she was just there physically but had no emotions at all. Throughout the movie Celie was beaten by her husband, belittled by her husband, her father as well as by her husband’s mistress and was cruelly treated by the world. And because Celie was verbally, physically and sexually abused it left her to believe she was worthless with no one to turn too. That’s when she started talking to God. She felt that because her husband Mister had ran away her sister the only person that had loved and knew loved her God was all she had. Celie never stopped to smell the roses. Celie had only been with men but when Shug came around Celie became confused about her attractions to women. Although Shug had called her ugly when they first met Shug became the person that Celie confide in. Shug was there to talk to Celie not talk at her like Mister. Just having someone there to listen can have someone thinking that they are attracted to someone. And when Shug kissed Celie, I think that brought on much more confusion. Celie now struggled with her sexual identity. Shug and Celie shared something she had only shared with her sister; love. They had a bond that she only had with her sister. Celie was very shy but later she came out of her shell and started to branch out with the help of Shug and the finding of her sister’s letters who she assumed was dead, because the last thing she had said to her was that “only death can keep you from me” and since she had not heard from her sister because Mister had been hiding her letter she presumed her
