The Analysis of Setting in Poe’s
“The Tell- Tale Heart”
Imagine a scenario, where your neighbour knocks at your door at midnight, and asks permission to burn down your house because he dislikes the windows fitted in the bedroom. A similar incident occurs in Allan Poe’s vivid tale “The Tell-tale Heart”. Poe’s tale is a story of a proud, self-centered, mentally challenged narrator. This unnamed narrator is obsessed with the bulging eye of an old man with whom he shares a house. We learn that the old man has always shown good gestures and attitude towards the narrator; however, the man responded with an utterly barbaric plot to execute the old man mercilessly. Poe used the metaphor to symbolize the imitation of a spider (creepy) little creature and masters the art of tailoring the web with the thread.
One more setting that acted as a catalytic factor was the “dreadful silence of that old house” as we know he was very cunning and confident in every move, but in tenth paragraph he showed the sign of anxiety and eagerness towards his target. He could not tolerate the dreadful silence of the old house, which informs us that house is isolated.
In these sequences of events, there is something unusual about the sound heard by the neighbours: The killer narrated that he threw the lantern on the floor; the old man “shrieked”; he toppled the heavy bed over the old man. Finally, plucking off the planks from the flooring of the chamber in the middle of the night, but according to narrator, the neighbour’s complaint the police, and reported to have heard about hearing of shriek of the old man. Later, when the cops arrived at the location, they were greeted by the narrator- oozing with confidence who helped them to search the premises well by convincing them that everything is normal and no foul play had occurred and that all the treasure is at the right place and position. This raises a question on the level of trust that old man bestowed upon the narrator, usually, something like treasure is closely guarded secret; but he was able to access the treasure without any
