Disability is the restriction or lack of capacity to perform an activity in a manner or within a range which is considered normal (WHO, 1980). Persons with disabilities are restricted in performing daily activities due to a complex set of interrelating factors. Some of these factors are pertaining to the individual, while others are related to the person’s environmental, social or political arrangements (Chandrashekar, Naveen Kumar, Prashanth & Kasthuri, 2010). Mental illness is one of the largest contributors to disability worldwide, with mental illnesses accounting for 25% of total disability and 16% of total burden (WHO, 2001). Five of the ten leading causes of disability are in the category of mental illnesses: major depression, alcohol dependence, schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder (WHO, 2001). The family may experience an array of stress ranging from objective burden (e.g. health care costs) to the subjective burden (e.g. fear, anxiety, mental and physical stress and fatigue).
The burden on families of mentally ill patients is high and has an impact on family leisure, routine, interaction as well as their mental health (Gautam & Nijhawan, 1984). In addition to the economic costs, symptoms and treatment, the patients and their family suffer from emotional strain due to discrimination, social isolation, stigma, disability, poverty, poor quality of life, and failures in many aspects of life (Yerramilli & Bipeta, 2012). Families in which a member is suffering from mental health problems have to make a number of adjustments and compromises that prevents them from achieving their full potential in work and relationships (Gallagher & Mechanic
