Conor goes through his nightmare all the way through to see how it ended but is too stubborn to say that how it ended was his fault. The monster forces Conor to say that his truth was that he had did what no child ever wants to do. In A Monster Calls, Patrick Ness uses symbolism through the tales to develop the theme of truth.
Truth is one of the hardest concept to grasp in life especially if your mother is dying of cancer. Conor was never told that his mother has cancer but he is aware of how worst his mother has gotten. Conor thinks that the monster that he sees has come to help his mother but the truth behind why the monster came was to help Conor come to the terms of losing his mother. Conor does not want to accept this as truth because he believes otherwise. The monster is a yew tree who was there to heal Conor from all the aftermath of what Conor was going through almost like a god figure. The king from the first tale I believe represents Conor’s dad who had left to be with his new wife who I thought was represented by the new queen who was called a witch. Then the prince was Conor and the prince’s beloved lady was Lily. Conor had pushed away LIly just as the prince killed his beloved to strike back against all that has happened to Conor so far. Then the time 12:07 represent when Conor finally owned up to the
