This is no dream about monsters under the bed... this is very different! It is the near future,on a deserted island in the Pacific Ocean, many people have heard of this so called beast and want to know what it is or what it means. Initially the beast represents fear. The beast is ever changing and has countless meanings and interpretations behind it. One of the biggest “beasts” in a person’s lives is our own fears. Document A states that “children begin to people the darkness of light and forest with spirits and demons which had previously appeared only in their dreams and fairytales.” This Document also says “They externalize these fears into a figure of a “beast”. A human beings fears are tremendously powerful. Many people often find themselves
overwhelmed by their own fears. Other than a person’s own fears, war and violence can force such drastic changes onto a person’s life. These occurrences can be very influential much like a beast. According to Document C, “It was a turning point for me. I began to see what people were capable of doing.” By saying this the author is explaining that he finally realized what people can do during a war which made it clear what they could do in life. Not all beasts are alienated creatures yet they are humans themselves. Document D states “The, each time the wind dropped, the lines would slacken and the figure bow forward again, sinking its head between its knees.” Anything that makes a dramatic changes to you or the world around can definitely be classified as a beast. Although beasts can be huge, ferocious animals with giant teeth and monster claws… that is not always the case. Even though it can be that, it can also be a variety of other thing such as one’s fears, an incident in someone’s life such as war and violence, or it could even simply be humans themselves.
