According to William Golding, humanity has always had a dark side and even the most respectable and dignified people can turn to their dark side if forced to due to their circumstances. I agree with Golding in this matter. The novel Lord of the Flies is a great example of this happening, as in the Minecraft game we played in class and the novel are very similar. In both of them they created factions between themselves.. Many people were killed due to the fact that people mistakenly thought that they were a beast or a zombie in Minecraft. Finally there was a lot of unnecessary killing just because they did not like the other person, for the materials they had or just for fun.
Firstly in the novel and Minecraft people formed groups. Some groups were stronger than others. During the earlier part of the novel all of the students worked as a one moderately organized group. Jack the rebel in the group said “I m not going to be part of Ralph’s lot… I am going off by my self. He can catch his own pigs”(Golding 166). This shows that Jack thinks that he is better than Ralph who was the leader or the ‘chief’ of the group at that point in the novel. The same thing also happened when we were playing Minecraft. A group of people who were evidently better at the game than the rest of the class made a …show more content…
group and started blackmailing other people for essential goods. This happened because they knew that it is a game and the laws and regulations which are playing a big role in the real world did not matter in the game. This was also an opportunity for them to be themselves, and let their inner self out. In the game they were able to do things that they will never be able to do in real life. This shows that every human has a dark side as proven in the novel and in the Minecraft game where they had to survive.
In both the novel and the game many people were killed because people mistakenly thought that they were a beast or a zombie. In the novel when all the kids are running around the fire doing there ‘pig dance’ Simon unfortunately meets his end
The blue-white scar was constant, the noise unendurable. Simon was crying out something about a dead man on a hill. ‘Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! Do him in!’ The sticks fell and the mouth of the new circle crunched and screamed. the beast was on its knees in the center, its arms folded over its face. It was crying out against the abominable noise something about a body on the hill. The beast struggled forward, broke the ring and fell over the steep edge of the rock to the sand by the water. At once the crowd surged after it, poured down the rock, leapt on to the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore. There were no words, and no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws (Golding 168, 169)
They thought Simon was the beast because of the violent thunder and lighting going on that night, so they mercilessly killed him.
Similarly in Minecraft when people were out at night, and the more powerful of the groups thought that they were the beast or something that would harm them they killed them. They did not think to make sure that they were a human or a beast. This also shows the fear people had for the stronger group. They were also afraid of the unknown (the beast) and in Minecraft they had to beware of monsters and also the other people who were suppose to be helpful according to our society. This also shows that all humans have a dark
side.
Finally in the novel and in the game there was a lot of unnecessary killing. In the novel Roger, (one of the really cruel kids) killed Piggy, who was a really smart person. “The great rock that had killed Piggy” (Golding 213) was shifted out of place by Roger. There was no need for Roger to kill Piggy but he did it just because he thought it would be fun. Correspondingly, while we were playing Minecraft some people just killed other people who were not that good at the game for no reason at all. They thought that it would be funny to kill them, so basically they just did that to fulfill their inner desire to kill people. This is another thing that shows that every person has a dark side.
Goldings thought experiment and the Minecraft game we played in class shows us that every human has a dark side. There were people who made groups among themselves instead of sticking together to survive. They also just killed people without making sure that they are human or beasts. Finally they killed people at will just to fulfill their inner desire to kill someone. All of these three points show that every human no matter of their race, age or gender have a dark side in them and it can come out at any time.
