On the surface, The Great Gatsby is a story of the thwarted love between a man and a woman. The main theme of the novel, however, encompasses a much larger, less romantic scope. Though all of its action takes place over a mere few months during the summer of 1922 and is set in a circumscribed geographical area in the vicinity of Long Island, New York, The Great Gatsby is a highly symbolic meditation on 1920s America as a whole, in particular the disintegration of the American dream in an era…

This theme is expressed throughout the book by how the energy changes when one doesn’t like another person they are with. The motif of weather shows when a relationship is a little unclear it rains and when there is tension it becomes very hot. The first reference showing the connection between the weather and love was “Some weather!...Hot!...Hot!...Hot!...Is it hot enough for you?”(Fitzgerald 115). This presents that…

The Great Gatsby was first published in 1925 and was one of Fitzgerald’s most well-known novels. Many aspects of this book caused this mass popularity, however the main reasons are his use of romantic modernism and most importantly, his portrayal of the different character. The different portrayals of the characters across Long island manipulate the reader’s opinion. One of the most famous examples for this is Gatsby. Gatsby is a very memorable character for many different reasons, such as the portrayal of him by Nick, his mannerisms, his reactions and doings. Each of these reasons helps him become memorable, however another important aspect of this memorability is the effects the Fitzgerald uses,…

"The Great Gatsby" is a book full of symbolism. On a large, political scope the book itself is a symbol of the materialism of the twenties. Many of the symbols in the book are given their meaning by the characters - who are symbols in and of themselves. To make this last point, it is only necessary to look at Gatsby himself.…

Tom figured out what was going on between Gatsby and Daisy. Then things started being said like, ““About Gatsby! No, I haven't. I said I'd been making a small investigation of his past." "And you found he was an Oxford man," said Jordan helpfully. "An Oxford man!" He was incredulous. "Like hell he is! He wears a pink suit."” (Fitzgerald 122). Hurtful things are said and this all reflects on the weather present in the chapter. The seasons also take up a great part of symbolism in the book. Spring has that meaning of new beginnings for characters in the story. This is when Nick moves to New York and the story begins. Next comes Summer where relationships become tense and heated. This makes sense because summer is the warmest season. Fall is the downhill of summer. Daisy and Gatsby’s relationship is coming to an end, just like the year is coming to an end in the fall or autumn season. This all leads to Winter where relationships and friendships are completely over. This relates to everything dying during…

When Gatsby finally reached her, an abrupt weather challenged the mood of the story. The pouring rain represents things going to the sad or wrong direction, but when the rain stops things starts to go well. When it began raining at their meeting, they might have been thinking about the sad and troublesome past, that’s why Daisy was sad and Gatsby is nervous. Additionally, it made the scene and conversation very out of depth and sad. When the rain stops, it represents that Gatsby and Daisy are together; it represents joy after the separation. The rain is a significant symbol of the story because it makes the scene morose, yet when it stops; it fills the whole surroundings with goodness, romance, and joy.…

In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby, life moves fast and there’s no time for people to care about each other’s problems. Now, this is not simply because people have become selfish. Instead, it’s the fact that pretentiousness has consumed the moral compass of East and West Eggers alike. Fitzgerald shows this ugly truth by using various symbols like cars and colors to represent different things. One motif or symbol that is evident throughout this novel is weather--which helps to set the mood of the current situation, foreshadow character’s emotions in the coming pages, and emphasize the presence of the theme: The moral corruption of the upper-class, materialistic American.…
