The Things They Carry Jimmy Cross Analysis
The Things They Carry is a very interesting book telling of war stories which may or may not be true.As the stories go on it tells some things about the soldiers and the things they carry.I believe in the story that everything they carry are either very meaningful to themselves or a necessity.Everyone carries something. Jimmy cross carries his photos of Martha, The men carry can openers, Knives, Kool-Aid, and water, but almost everyone humps (carries) photos of girls, of family, and of friends.Although the men carry these things they also carry things based on superstition.
Jimmy Cross carries photos of martha,he also carries her letters that she sent him.Jimmy loves martha and hopes martha loves him too but in reality she is only a friend.He continues to love her and that is one thing he also carries is love for martha. “They were not love letters ,but lieutenant Cross was hoping,”(Paragraph 1,Line 2).The letters that he …show more content…
carries is not a necessity just something that he wants.In a way though it gets him through the war and keeps him hoping that she loves him.
The men carry necessities like can-openers,Knives,Kool-Aid ,and water.The men also carry weapons,M-60,M-16,RPG’s,and when they go to the mountains they carry a 28 lb mine detector.As a soldier they must carry some of these things to survive. “The things they carried were largely determined by necessity”(Paragraph 2,Line 1).Food, water, and weapons are the most important tools to carry during a war but some people carry things because of superstition.
“Sanders wrapped the thumb in toilet paper and handed it across to Norman Bowker”(Paragraph 25,Line 4).Norman Bowker carried a viet congs thumb for superstition.When Sanders cut it off he said there was a moral to it.”Have gun,will travel”(paragraph 25,line 7).This “moral” really makes no sense, but really none of it does.
This just shows that the soldiers carried pretty much anything whether it be a necessity,a want, a personal need or even something that has a “moral” to it.
The Things They Carried is an interesting book ,but it really doesn't make any sense.It tells about the things the soldiers carry.Tim O'brian is a very creative writer but we don't know what's true and what's not.I believe that's what makes his stories so interesting.The soldiers are the main characters in the story.They're tough, and carry the knowledge that they might die at any time. They carry the fear of embarrassment and the fear of blushing. They don't talk about these things, and they mock guys who take the easy way
out.
